DJ SHADOW / APATHY / ILL BILL [#GeekSwag Reviews]: Handsnakes With…

Although DJ Shadow has partnered up with Cut Chemist to do a tour celebrating a Tribute to Afrika Bambaataa, it’s been 5-years since his last original solo album. So unlock the gates because the new vinyl is upon us and The Mountain Will Fall!

After the emcee-heavy The Outsider (2006) and his more energized, adrenaline-fueled The Less You Know, The Better (2011), Shadow has shot back to his early days of just putting together some solid beats accompanied with some grooving sounds. The difference, this time around, is the dark and nebulous feel of The Mountain; it feels almost like a misguided trip through a cave to “parts unknown”–such as Three Ralphs and Suicide Pact. The majority of the tracks, though, are chill melodies that you can bob your head to while driving the longest road watching the sun go down.

But don’t fret, sons; there’s still some pump-your-fist-and-jump tracks, such as “Nobody Speak” (feat. Mass Appeal labelmates Run the Jewels), which was first performed at this year’s Coachella Music Festival, and “The Sideshow” (feat. Ernie Fresh), which is one of the most standout tracks. The joint has Shadows’ historic slicing and scratching licks with an onslaught attack of lyrics by Fresh.

The only drawback to this record, overall? There’s actually just not enough. Almost every single track clocks in at under 5-minutes — atypical of Shadow — finishing off just as it really finds its groove. Although I’m a bigger fan of Shadow’s more thunderous, harder drums and swiftly-paced beat changeups, I still find plenty of The Mountain to enjoy. Although quite immensely, a certain mood and mind-state may be required this time around over the anytime-is-fine play of his early joints. 4.25/5 Entrobibles

APATHY - Handshakes With Snakes - Released: 6/10/16
APATHYHandshakes With Snakes – Released: 6/10/16

@travmoody

A few things worthy of note real quick before I get into this review. 1.) It’s been awfully hard trying to figure out, between 3001: A Laced Odyssey, Lead Poison, and The Impossible Kid, which hip-hop album has been the best I’ve heard so far this year, 2.) Handshakes With Snakes might be the most “#GeekSwag” album I’ve heard all year (i.e. shitloads of popular geek culture references in the music) despite the fact Apathy told me a few years ago at a Demigodz show in Chinatown, Los Angeles that he “wasn’t the one” to have Star Wars references in his songs. OK, Ap; you can’t fool the former “Loose Cannon” now, not after this joint.

Thankfully non-geeks, true hip-hop heads, blunt tokers, 40 oz. sippers, and just about anyone who doesn’t have a slithering cobra up their behind is going to enjoy the fuck outta Ap’s 5th studio LP. I’ve known the guy since his early days in the Providence and Boston underground hip-hop circuit (we talkin’ late 90s, breh), and to think he’s still pouring out lyrics, lyrics, lyrics after all these years is quite the feat. The AOTP/Demigod spitter has always been a fan of the mainstream agility of Jigga Man, so it’s great to hear him warn n00bz on the LP’s opener “Pay Your Dues” (featuring a resung hook from Phil Collins’ “You Can’t Hurry Love” and a swift piano break from “The Bridge is Over”), with a Jason Voorhees shout and.. {{{hold the phone!}}}.. “we used to walk up into party like Jedi knights”.

Yeah, thought so.

“Amon RAW” namedrops the Juggernaut, Hobgoblin, and spits one of the hottest #GeekSwag lines of the year: “I got a toxic ass canister poppin’/ and fans hoppin’/ out the windows at shows like death is the only option / Y’all don’t wanna sit quietly and observe/ this comic book nerd who got a loaded Mossberg” and goes even further than George Lucas with a reference to a certain warlike humanoid alien species from Star Trek, with an unbelievable verse from Ap’s usual partner-n-crime Celph Titled. “Rap is Not Pop” carries more of the same industry weight as the opener, with a druid ref hidden in between a smoking multisyllabic attack over illuminating keys and a mesmerizing drum pattern. By the way, Apathy (much like Aesop Rock on that other awesome self-produced album this year), produces Handshakes in its entirety to exceptional results.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0uA_Nq7ZlA

Another gift is the album’s guest appearances, which, while entirely fantastic, don’t take away from Apathy’s bars and actually make sense thematically. Seeing how Ap and O.C. have a forthcoming collabo in the works, it’s nice to see the two exchange profound #geekswaggery on a pair (“Don’t Touch That Dial”, with rhyme legend Ras Kass–another guy I’ve been dying for Apathy to work with–and “Run For Your Life”), with Ap “the Human Torch/ Flames flicker on my spin/ covered in pins like Hellraiser, my sins/ are far too numerous, let’s just say that I’m fucked/ I’m on a highway to hell inside a gasoline truck” and O.C.’s “starter pistol rang and his feet left the blocks via Flash, Jay Garrick on rapper’s songs I blur.” Omar Credle also namedrops the Green Lantern while Ap mentions Electro on the funky, nearly 70s blaxploitated latter track.

Apathy also manages to make a song titled “Charlie Brown” (with Oh No and a Nate Dogg-meets-DV Alias Khrist sounding crooner named Kappa Gamma) sound sci-fi, with plenty of analogous lyrics that compare his style–both rapping and dating–to that of another dimension (even Quaser is mentioned). I’m really enjoying how the emcee/producer uses metaphorical pop culture to shadow his industry commentary; it’s the far more admirable show-don’t-tell method a lot of pop-hating indie rappers fail to use. With that said, maybe the only track I wasn’t wowed by on the whole record was “Blow Ya Head Off”. While Ap kills it (of course), the track would have served better on a mixtape with its pair of just decent guest spots and monotonous piano backdrop. “Attention Deficit Disorder” and “Moses” (with Bun B and Twista!) showcase Ap at his flowingly finest, ripping the most clean and concise rhymes you’ll ever hear in the double-time; even the former manages to tell an interesting story despite the tremendous speed and lack of drums, and the latter sounds like a track the RZA wishes he could still produce.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1XTmeiCAMs

“Maybe I just play too much Xbox/ classic competition like the Yankees and Red Sox.” Seriously, those are not my lyrics; but it’s almost like Ap is speaking for me. And, yeah, geeks, “No Such Thing” has outstanding Jabba the Hutt and Ghost Rider rhymes. “Pieces of Eight (Give Up the Ship)” would sound right at home with New England vidyagame Fallout 4‘s “Far Harbor”, while the closing title track will take listeners to the ganja-filled tropics of Mexico and the tight raps of a pair of Soul Assassins, Sick Jacken and some guy named B-Real.

Look, nerds… my original intent of reviewing this record was the usual quick 2-paragraph opinion piece–until I was instantly poisoned by my own ear of Apathetic analysis. Handshakes With Snakes is undoubtedly, after several afternoon listens, gym sessions and long drives to the Bay and Vegas, the finest hip-hop album of 2016’s first half. Better, the LP clearly erases all previous notions that Apathy is a “mixtape and guest appearance” rapper. Truth: he’s an incredibly accomplished emcee and producer who now has a certified classic under his belt… with plenty more daps and handshakes coming along the way. 4.5/5 Bibles.

Kevin "Pastor" Palma @eggrollko
Kevin “Pastor” Palma
@eggrollko

As someone who critiques art in a public forum, I’m occasionally forced to face my own subjective bias to a certain extent. Previously on this site, I’ve criticized both comics and hip-hop albums for being just more of the same from an artist. However, while Septagram is par for the course for Ill Bill, I still enjoy it greatly. Anybody who’s heard an Ill Bill album before (or really any of the major East Coast underground artists of the early-mid 2000’s) knows exactly what they’ll be getting here. For those who aren’t familiar, Bill’s lyrics are socially conscious as he rides keyboard bass heavy beats to perfection.

On Septagram, the Non Phixion and La Coka Nostra member’s 5th album, he does have more guest appearances than usual, even plenty of Gore-Tex and Q-Unique(!!), but everyone complements his style well; the most welcome additions, though, are fellow LCN pal Slaine and Lawrence Arnell, with both seeing a blazer from JMT in-house beatmaker, C-Lance (Enemy Soil).

Bill also seems to be less socially critical and angry and more socially observant while he has fun, which is a nice slight change, but also makes me prefer many of his other albums. Also, rather perfectly, this album is loaded with geeky references, including a weird-but-cool Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. line, and production fro MoSS that strangely sounds a ton like MF DOOM (hey–I ain’t mad at it!). All in all, Septagram is another bloody good album from Ill Bill that’s worth adding to the hip-hop collection. 4/5 Bibles.

ACTION MAN / CIVIL WAR II – CHOOSING SIDES / LUCAS STAND [Reviews]: BOOM! Goes the Dynamite!

Another weekend, another look forward at some upcoming comics titles. This week we have a few familiar names, and at least one of those names is new to the comic book world.

So, you know what to expect, you know what we do, and, after this, you’ll know what to buy (or not, and why!)

"Chaplain" Chris Gooch
“Chaplain” Chris Gooch
ACTION MAN #1 --- IDW PRESS
ACTION MAN #1 – IDW Publishing

“Action Man: the greatest hero of them all!” or that’s at least what IDW are hoping you will think. That’s right, the publishing company that loves to pull on your nostalgia strings are dusting off Action Man. They’ve thrown every cartoon series based on an action figure they can get the licensing rights to at the wall in hopes that they will stick. Some have stuck, some have failed, but many have really outstayed their welcome on the wall.

So where exactly does the new Action Man series stick on said wall?

The first thing you need to know, is that (***SPOILER ALERT!***) Action Man is dead. The issue opens with the old Action Man passing the torch to a new Action Man. Our new Action Man begins a new mission that involves a train, some ninjas, some tigers, a dirty-bomb and a bunch of eye-rollingly cheesy one-liners. The rest of the story, much like the supporting characters, doesn’t really feel like it has any legs. It’s mostly a one-dimensional, predictable storyline that is threaded together thinly with cliched 007 spy tropes, but that isn’t to say that the series won’t have potential in the future.

The story is split into two parts, with two separate artists working respectively on each. The first artist is Chris Evenhuis, who you may have have known for Top Cow’s The Darkness: Resurrection, and he brings an Archer-esque look to the proceedings that is also enhanced with an Archer-esque colour palette thanks to the work of John-Paul Bove. This art showed some promise for the opening, however it also makes you realize that the writing would have benefited from a little bit more of Archer’s self-awareness. The second artist, Paolo Vilanelli (G.I. JoeSnake Eyes), has a kinetic, Anime-inspired American look and feel, but often this means just a lot of action lines when people are shooting, fighting or running and a lot of stilted artwork when there is no action.

Overall, this first issue is probably only for die-hard fans and people who have nothing else to read this week. Honestly, I’d save my money as there are better things being produced by other publishers, and there’s even better titles being produced by IDW. 1/5 Bibles.

CIVIL WAR II: CHOOSING SIDES --- MARVEL COMICS
CIVIL WAR II: CHOOSING SIDES #1 – Marvel Comics

Civil War: Choosing sides…should you skip it? Lets find out.

You are getting three separate story-lines dealing with how this “civil war” is unfolding.

Storyline #1 shows you a familiar face we all love to see: Nick Fury. I swear I can hear Samuel L. Jackson’s voice whenever I read Nick Fury’s character. This story brings up a new potential “big baddie” with a new angle. No more “Hail Hydra” for these guys! They are actually all about that “shield life”; it’s quite possible that they are going about it the wrong way? Declan Shalvey (Moon Knight) does a nice job of writing and illustrating.

Storyline #2 brings out the Night Thrasher. We see a familiar “big baddie” tearing up the city in the beginning. Quite typical (do you guys ever wonder what these people’s property taxes must be like?) opening, but then we see a face that is as far from typical as possible. The Night Thrasher’s inner dialogue is quite enjoyable, as he’s a really funny dude! Also love that his feelings toward Iron Man remind me of my own. The colors by Andrew Crossley really brought this story to life.

The final story will make you laugh, ending with a warm fuzzy feeling at the end that barely saves the filler. Overall, not the worst tie-in in Marvel event history, but highly unnecessary. 2/5 Bibles.

LUCAS STAND #1 --- BOOM! STUDIOS
LUCAS STAND #1 – BOOM! Studios

Kurt Sutter, writer of smash TV hits Sons of Anarchy and The Shield has taken pen to hand once more to bring to us Lucas Stand and it’s about what you’d expect.

Sutter, in my view, has always put very exaggerated spins on every typical character archetype out there. Stand is no different. Military veteran. Handicapped. Loose cannon. Angry as shit. Drug abuser. Overflowing with internal demons to which anyone lesser would succumb. Only as the inaugural issue unfolds do we come to find that not all Stand’s demons are in his own head.

Kurt Sutter is a brilliant man. I have had the pleasure of eavesdropping a time or two on some of his conversations and he’s one of those people that is almost **too** smart– so much in fact that much of the nuance that he provides through his storytelling is lost on most. At face value, Stand is exactly what it looks like: a badass Punisher-type character who now has a mission to kill demons. But you can almost guarantee that Sutter is telling a much deeper story here; not that I’ll understand it, but it’s there.

Lucas Stand is good, not great. In typical Sutter fashion, it’s a little all over the place, not exactly straight forward, and might be tough to follow if one isn’t familiar with his style. This first issue did a fine job, however, at the very least piquing my interest for the rest of the series. 3/5 Bibles.

If you don’t know the name Liam Sharp already, get ready: this summer, you’re bound to hear it a lot. Sharp (2000 A.D., Gears of War) might just be the breakout star in all this Rebirth madness, too, which is no surprise to me, really, since DC fangirls and boys were already “ooohing” and “aahhing” months ago at Sharp’s revealed sketches during DC’s Rebirth announcement event. His Wonder Woman is the perfect mesh of power and finesse, her confidence entirely believable in every which way. With an assist from the dynamic Game of Thronesque colors of Laura Martin (Astonishing X-Men), her stature, motion and stance fit the regality witnessed with Gal Gadot in BvS; and the sudden fear struck across her face during the issue’s final confrontation–and, better, antagonist reveal–is nearly heartbreaking.

Also picking up on Diana’s newfound steam is writer Greg Rucka (The Punisher, Batwoman). After an exposition-laden Rebirth issue a couple weeks ago, Rucka steers WW “Into The Woods” and the results are hauntingly beautiful. Each panel is designed like a quick edit cut, but with all the harsh spirituality of her Themysciran heritage. Sharp’s wild character designs are captivating, and Rucka’s dialogue never cheeses up the battles. Readers siding with Diana should have their hearts beating the whole time. With Etta and Steve Trevor (who looks damned gruff and cool in this issue) also locked in for at least half of this ongoing, it’ll be interesting to see how her forthcoming origin story (drawn by Nicola Scott) affects the current, vastly enjoyable matter-at-hand. 4.5/5 Bibles.

THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS: THE LAST CRUSADE #1 – DC
Kimberly "Cenobitess" Brock @beerock26
Kimberly “Cenobitess” Brock
@beerock26

Batman is fairly aged and worn down in the latest episode of Brian Azzarello (Wonder Woman) and 300 scribe Frank Miller‘s The Dark Knight Returns. Bruce is honing Robin in hopes that he will have a suitable successor once he has officially retired. There is a great conflict between the men, and Batman sees much of himself in the impulses of his young partner. However, Bruce’s fatherly nature is not ignored in his attempts to tighten the reigns on his blooming partner.

As The Joker wrecks his sociopathic havoc on Gotham’s insane asylum and the city itself, Batman battles age, injury, and internal conflicts while Robin is pushing forward to establish himself as a important figure in Gotham; although his youth and inexperienced expose him. The Last Crusade is massive, and offers a bit of everything — both heavy on suspense and action — while maintaining interest throughout. 3.5/5 Sin City Bibles.

AQUAMAN #1 - DC
AQUAMAN #1 – DC
"Cardinal" Roberto de Bexar @RobBex2
“Cardinal” Roberto de Bexar
@RobBex2

When Geoff Johns brought Aquaman into the New 52, he poked fun at his status in pop culture and really made the book come to life. His run, much like that of his Green Lantern, was nothing short of amazing. So when Rebirth was announced, this comic-loving Cardinal was very intrigued to see if Dan Abnett (Guardians of the Galaxy) could recapture that glory–and I have to say, the usual space-set scribe does an admirable job of recreating what made Johns’ Aquaman so great. Arthur Curry is a literal “fish outta water”. Pun intended, of course. Mera (a.k.a. “Aquawoman”) is the only one under the ocean who truly loves and has faith in Art, and he is feared by the majority of the surface world.

Abnett has created great tension within the book between Arthur Curry and his people, the surface world and an ever-vengeful Black Manta. Former GOTG artist Brad Walker’s art is crisp, clean and, at times, dynamic. It’s not the overly cartoonish Aquaman of yore; but, he is bringing an indie-esque, realistic approach that looks fantastic. With this slippery super team, this run has the potential to be — at the very least — the second best ever run on Aquaman. 4.5/5 Underwater Neptune Bibles.

FLASH #1 - DC
FLASH #1 – DC
Colleen "of the Covenant" Vincent
Colleen “of the Covenant” Vincent

This #1 in the DC Rebirth Universe, goes through the day-to-day live of Barry Allen, the best known iteration of the speed force, a.k.a. The Flash. It seems like Barry is having trouble, you know, with reality missing a whole decade and all. But, he is making the best of it, living his dual life as the heroic speedster and civilian gig as a Central City forensic scientist. While the Flash saves folks from tornados and burning buildings, Barry Allen is reviewing crime scenes to give justice to those he couldn’t save. He has a full life, Wally West (a.k.a. Kid Flash) has returned, and he is playing a father figure to.. uh.. Wally West, Iris’ nephew; all a bit confusing, sure, but the entire issue is really just a set up for the players.

S.T.A.R. Labs transport gets attacked and someone Barry cares about gets caught in the middle and lightning strikes…again. Someone undergoes a transformation and indeed “The Storm Is Just Getting Started”. We’re barely in the first act and this reader is hooked. Writer Joshua Williamson (Captain Midnight, Robocop) brilliantly uses Barry’s internal monologue to move the chess pieces into place. The immensely talented Carmine Di Giandomenico’s (Daredevil, X-Factor) art is given is fantastically rendered life by colorist Ivan Plascencia (Constantine, Haunt). The speed force looks as much a character as any of the others and that action sequences leap off the pages. Tune in for the next episode! 4.5/5 Lightning Bibles.

AGENTS OF MAYHEM (Volition/Deep Silver – X1, PS4, PC – TBA Q1 2017) – Every year at E3, I always get an appointment or two that says “Unannounced Game”, and it’s always a risk attending an hour-long booking not knowing whether the game will suit the interests of your fanbase or yourself. Luckily for me, the Saints Row off-shoot Agents of Mayhem was a lot more fun than the anticipation. The game is sort of a mash-up of Saints, a non-post-apocalyptic Borderlands and Crackdown–which is particularly great, seeing how that game was completely absent from the Expo this year. Saints, because the game is based on a new world, rebuilt South Korean futurama that resulted from “Gat Outta Hell”; Borderlands, because of all of Seoul’s friendly droids, quirky weapon and character changes; Crackdown, because of its super colorful, futuristic setting.

(cont.) Better news than just awesomely familiar territory? You alternate between 3 unique characters with 3 unique skill sets (Hardtack‘s short-ranged, powerful weaponry; Fortune and Hollywood‘s medium-ranged assault, and Rama‘s long-ranged archery), while having the ability to recruit more heroes in the process. Switching between each character mid-battle was seemless, and each had 2 really cool special “Mayhem” attacks that are typically over-the-top awesome. I chuckled several times during my BCD playthrough, especially during the K-Pop antagonist’s dance choreographed spectacle. Let it be known that fans of comic books and superhero movies will especially enjoy this game!

SEA OF THIEVES (Rare/Microsoft – Xbox One – February 2017) – Rehab no longer. If you’ve gotten yourself in trouble with the bottle before, then I’ve got a solution for ya: soda. With friends. And an Xbox One copy of Rare’s newest and brightest IP, Sea of Thieves. If you ever wanted to “play pirates” with a bunch of your pals without the lame task of having to go all Hollywood Blvd. as Jack Sparrow, SOT is your cure. To seemingly everything–unless you only enjoy single player campaigns, of course, which is actually my preference; but the possibilities and the open mind of the developers in this #GeekSharedWorldAdventureGame are enough to hold up my bloody musket. You see, players will have plenty to do: quest-searching, treasure-hunting, crew-forming, crew-fighting, sea monster-hunting, ship-customizing, instrument-playing, and Captain Morgan-guzzling (and perhaps killing).

(cont.) While players can go at it alone, manning smaller ships and completing tinier tasks–not recommended, arggh–proper co-operation when playing with others is a must. You can’t be a Jack D’ to your fellow ‘mates until much later (still YTBD); and Rare has made sure crews will need all four of you to properly operate in the open seas, since there won’t be any NPC’s in the ships to do it all for you (but there will be a few around the game’s open world). During my BCD meeting with creators, it was mentioned that sinking/dying has its own high stakes, but nothing terribly absolute ala DayZ. They also looked at the success of Ark and Destiny as business models, listening to fan feedback through various development stages to get things right. Also, while much of the game indeed takes place over the seven seas, players will also be able to traverse among various islands through ports, shops, and, quite alrighty obvious me lady, a few taverns.

STEEP (Ubisoft – X1, PS4, PC – December 2016) – After years and years of Just Dancing, just stabbing and just shooting, Ubisoft pulled out one of E3’s newest surprises with its new X-Games inspired, open winter mountain set Steep. It’s also the first of its kind: a snowboard/ski game that allows you to venture around and do as you please. No longer are virtual snow bunnies relegated to linear speed-and-track segments; the massive Alps is shared online MMO-style, with a wild assortment of costumes to rock and events to plow through. There are even “shattered bone” events for purposeful self-inflicted damage, among them an extreme stunt-filled, Red Bull sponsored “Ultra Natural” snowboarding extravaganza.

(cont.) Players who just want to enjoy the view can quietly veer off and paraglide close to the drafty ice-capped cliffs for scores. Wingsuit races were probably my favorite of the bunch, and the skiing felt satisfying. While much of what I got to play BCD was clearly in its alpha stages (the fluffy snow felt real, but the surrounding mountain textures were a bit weak; camera angles were also pixelated-as-fuhh during the insanely cool-but-queasey GoPro view), do remember the huge visual improvement For Honor made in one year. Either way, Steep surely has enough promise to keep both new and old fans of the SSX Tricky/Amped variety a bit “chill” for hours.
