Before we get into the comics from last week that I should have reviewed last week, a quick word on the lateness of the reviews. This past Friday through Sunday was Planet Comicon in Kansas City, one of the biggest and best comic book conventions in the Midwest. I had my own table, selling my own wares, and it was amazing. I met so many people, shook so many hands, sold so many of my own comics, and just had an incredible time. I’m not bragging, I promise; I’m just telling you that reviews would have been way earlier had my week not been spent planning and preparing for the show and then being at the show.
And now: THE FISTFUL!
CAPTAIN MARVEL #1
Another of Marvel’s quick re-releases with a similar if not exact same core creative team, Captain Marvel is back, once again with Kelly Sue Deconnick as writer and once more with Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel.
Ably joined by David Lopez on art and Lee Loughridge on colors, it’s another strong debut issue. We jump in headfirst, in the middle of an intergalactic fistfight in an outer space bazaar and we are meeting a large group of people alongside Carol that we’ve never met before.
Then we get the credits page and flashback to how we all got here.
All in all, it’s a strong debut. A strong start to the series. Did we need it though.. is the big question? The Cleric was one of the people buying the old series and loved it. I loved the high-flying, high-action, high drama book that was coming out before so this just feels like more of the same for a dollar more.
Regardless, Kelly Sue and David are doing fantastic work with the characters, but slapping a new number one issue on it just feels like a waste. It could have just as easily been the next issue in the series with a new arc and a new direction attached and we would have been fine.
The addition of James Rhodes and the new people from the beginning is one of the more subtle changes. Her cast from the previous book is still around and things seem pretty much the same.
I don’t know. All in all it was good, but a number one issue it really wasn’t.
