First announced at Emerald City Comic Con, the new ongoing series REDLANDS—created by the all-female team of bestselling, Eisner award-winning Jordie Bellaire (PRETTY DEADLY, Vision, Batman) and critically-acclaimed Vanesa R. del Rey (ZERO, Scarlet Witch, Constantine)—will launch this August.
“Redlands is my sick, weird love letter to Stephen King, Florida and Riot Grrrls everywhere but ultimately, hate mail for everything else,” said Bellaire. “Inspired by the strange complexities of real world politics and crime, the characters of Redlandsplay victim and villain, attempting to understand themselves and others, through murder, magic and mayhem.”
REDLANDS introduces readers to the sleepy, sunny town of Redlands, Florida where the police are failing to maintain control of their old-fashioned community and a coven of killer witches plan to take everything from them.
Del Rey added: “The world of Redlands was brewed in darkness, it is murky waters, it is a gloomy day in the humidity of the mangroves. There is ferocity in this land, it is savagery that goes deep noir. The stories that develop in this world are as intricate as the etched lines that depict them.”
Marrying the sexy, witchy-goodness of Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott’s BLACK MAGICK and Melissa de la Cruz’s beloved Witches of East End with the deep-South atmosphere of Jason Aaron and Jason Latour’s SOUTHERN BASTARDS and American Horror Story: Coven, REDLANDS is set to be the horror series of the summer.
REDLANDS #1 will hit stores on Wednesday, August 9th.
Eisner-winning series writer Greg Rucka (THE OLD GUARD, BLACK MAGICK) is joined by series designer/writer Eric Trautmann, plus writers Aaron Duran and Neal Bailey, and six different artists for the six-issue miniseries LAZARUS: X+66, which sets the stage for LAZARUS’s sixth story arc, this July.
In LAZARUS: X+66 #1, superstar artist Steve Lieber (THE FIX, Superior Foes of Spider-Man) lends his talents to the trials and tribulations of Casey Solomon as she fights to survive Dagger training. Ever since she caught the eye of the Lazarus, Casey has learned that gaining the Family’s attention can be as much of a curse as a blessing. Will Dagger Selection destroy Casey, or will survival mean something worse?
Subsequent issues will feature art by Mack Chater, Justin Greenwood, Alitha Martinez, Bilquis Evely, and Tristan Jones. Each issue will boast a cover by series artist Michael Lark.
“Part of the joy of writing LAZARUS for me is exploring and defining different aspects of the world, and in particular the characters who inhabit it,” said Rucka. “Following the events of Cull, and gearing up for the inevitable trauma that will be Fracture, this was the ideal time and place to look into some of the corners of our universe that had been, for one reason or another, neglected, while at the same time buttressing and expanding on the overall ‘main story’ that Michael and I are telling. Every one of these stories is important in the larger narrative, and getting to provide a laser focus on them is simply something that we can’t do in the confines of the pages of the monthly.
“And, speaking purely selfishly,” Rucka added, “it’s a chance to work closely with some amazing talent in both writing and art at the same time.”
“This project has been a ridiculous amount of fun,” said Trautmann. “LAZARUS has such a unique and interesting setting (which happens to cleave very closely to my own bleak outlook), and it has a surprising and subtle undercurrent of humor so black it has an event horizon. Who wouldn’t jump at the chance to participate?”
“My previous collaborations with Greg and with Eric were career highlights for me, both personally and professionally,” said Lieber. “I was thrilled to work with them both together, along with the wildly talented color artist Santi Arcas.”
LAZARUS: X+66 #1 hits comic book stores Wednesday, July 19th.
