MARVEL’S INHUMANS (Thursday – Ballroom 20) –
Marvel’s Inhumans has been a rollercoaster ever since the first announcements came out. The initial announcement of it premiering in IMAX generated a lot of excitement, but the first images cooled a lot of it. The trailer then proceeded to kill almost any excitement left for it, so Marvel TV had a high hill to climb to get fans back on board and based on what I saw in Ballroom 20,
They’ve tumbled further down that hill instead…
The panel included Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, Sonya Balmores as Auran, Mike Moh as Triton, Ken Leung as Karnak, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Iwan Rheon as Maximus, Serinda Swan as
Medusa, Anson Mount as Black Bolt and the big reveal of Ellen Woglom playing Louise, an original character with.. no powers. The panel itself wasn’t much more than each actor talking about adapting their characters, so Marvel was relying entirely on the footage to carry it.
They showed a dinner table sequence and action sequences for Triton, Gorgon, Karnak and Medusa and unfortunately the only one that actually looked pretty good was the Karnak sequence. The dinner sequence had two interesting parts where we find out that Black Bolt communicates using sign language with Medusa as his interpreter and Maximus challenges his authority, making it seemingly clear that Maximus is more in-touch with the people of Attilan than Black Bolt.
Outside of that, the scene is full of some groan-worthy dialogue from Karnak, Gorgon, and Medusa. The action sequence for Gorgon just had him stomp the ground really hard and then kick some guys around; the one for Triton just had him on the run, but gave us our first look at him in full makeup which makes him look like the Mask with a fin on his head; Medusa’s was intended to give us our first look at her hair in action, but, sadly, it doesn’t even look as good Roku’s hair in the Ninjak YouTube series. Karnak’s scene was the only interesting one, even though it felt more reminiscent of Amadeus Cho than Karnak from the comics. It’s hard to say
that this panel was much of a letdown considering the low bar I entered it with, but somehow they managed to duck right underneath that bar. 1/5 Silent Bibles.
Marvel’s Inhumans is set to premiere on Friday, September 29 at 8pm on ABC.
