HOGWARTS LEGACY [Review] – Ride The Lightning (Rod).

“Reverend” Lauro Rojas
@Cheeky_Basterds

“You’re a wizard Harry,” are the words uttered by the affable Hagrid to the boy wizard Harry Potter, subsequently kicking off a wizarding empire. Sending tots and teens alike fawning for a Wizarding World detached from the glum and ordinary reality.

Trips to the Wizarding World were limited to books and film mediums as well as trips to Universal that could empty out Harry’s vault at Gringotts. Since 1997 fans have wanted to not only step into Harry Potter’s shoes but to forge their own destiny all the while getting into their own misadventures and getting lost in that magical world.

Suffice it to say Avalanche Software has finally achieved the dream of stepping into your own witch or wizard in this fully realized world of Hogwarts Legacy. Having spent 20 hours playing I can confidently say this is the definitive way to experience Hogwarts…

The story revolves around your 15-year old witch or wizard displaying the gift of manipulating ancient magic, something even the most grizzled of wizards and witches are not privy to. This new found ability is set upon by Ranrock, leader of the goblin rebellion and Victor Rookwood, leader of a group of dark wizards. All the while Professor Fig, your mentor and closest ally, helps to solve the mystery of this ancient magic. While attend classes to get your wizard training on as well as getting into hijinks with your classmates.

The first hour zooms by as the linear storytelling takes you from the streets of London to the depths of Gringotts and finally to the front doors of Hogwarts. Once you’ve mastered the basics the game turns you loose into the fleshed out world to take on tasks in whatever order. If you’re like me you’re likely to roam the halls of Hogwarts in stupefied awe from tippy top to the dankest low taking it all in, petting cats and spinning globes.

The magic in Hogwarts Legacy is the way it presents the missions, mysteries, tasks and the kitchen sink, while not overwhelming the player. You can be traversing the halls on your way to Charms class and a student flags you down to help them find their gobstones or you find a door with magic arithmetic you’re interested to find out what lies beyond it. Your curiosity is what’s driving you to all the nooks and crannies of Hogwarts.

It also helps that Hogwarts always seems so lively, students are coming to and fro with stacks of books in their arms, socializing in groups, paper airplanes whizzing by, suits of armor trying their best to stand still as sentinels, the many ghosts with their own comings and goings and let’s not forget the moving paintings. Sound engineering adds to the ambiance of the fully realized Wizarding World as the music swells with a new melody while evoking what came before in John Williams‘ iconic “Hedwig’s Theme”, those instantly recognizable chimes are there to lift your spirits and stir this wondrous excitement.

Combat system starts off dull but as you learn more spells you become proficient in completing combos and juggling your opponents like they’re life sized pins. The combat is reminiscent of that of Spider-Man or Batman Arkham series games where your face buttons create combos all the while you keep an eye out for well timed parries and attack dodges. I haven’t even touched on the Room of Requirement where you can spend a dizzying amount of hours customizing to fit your own tastes. Or the fact that you can tame and care for fantastic beasts and connect with your inner Newt Scamander.

Reports of game breaking glitches are unfounded as the biggest hindrances I found was a lack of gear storage, as of now my character has 20 slots which easily fill up with robes, hats, gloves, capes, glasses, outfits. I mean, for god sakes Hermione had a small purse that had a tent inside of it. Maybe I’m just not to that point yet. There’s some instances of clipping but only so slightly. At times you’ll go through a door to a new area and your character will stutter for half a second whilst the area loads, a small price to pay for all the eccentricities that surround you. Also no Quidditch, but the pitch is there so fingers crossed for a Quidditch DLC pack.

With the firestorm created by J.K. Rowling’s inflammatory remarks it’s understood why a lot of people may be apprehensive about picking up the controller. But please, don’t bash those that wish to experience this game. Just know that the majority of the people playing have been waiting to experience this for years if not decades, this writer included.

Rowling be damned.

With reality in disarray and becoming more surreal we turn to the Wizarding World where we can get lost in the fantastic world of Hippogriffs, spells, witches and wizards — where some problems can be fixed with a simple swish and incantation. So grab your wand and do something magical today.

4.5/5 Butterbeers

THE E3ODUS [E3 2019 Previews]: Harry Potter / Vampire Masquerade / Resident Evil 8.

HARRY POTTER: WIZARDS UNITE (Niantic/PortKey Games/WBIE – Android/iOS – 2019) – Are you a hardcore Potterhead who looks at all their friends sharing Pokemon Go trainer requests and wished that there was a similar game that would let them catch Thestrals?

Wait no more, Muggles!

Wizards Unite is a Potter version of Pokemon Go, where your GPS and actual location and phone camera are used to help you track and capture fantastic beasts and locate portkeys that will bring you into 360 augmented reality versions of famous Wizarding World sites. The game is currently beta testing in Australia and will be released later this year.

VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE – BLOODLINES 2 (Hardsuit Labs/Paradox Interactive – PS4/X1/PC – Q1 2020) – The Masquerade is back– bigger, badder, and darker than the original. An RPG game that plays off of the old pen & paper/real world games, this sequel to Bloodlines moves the action from Los Angeles to Seattle. Players start as a factionless vamp and choose a family and a faction and fight for power and control over the city. Its narrative-driven play and multiple options encourage repeat game play and multiple side quests increase overall gameplay time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYvWfDxhm_s

Unlike in a traditional, physical RPG, you can’t choose or design your character but you can choose your human occupation, which will have an influence on how others react to you throughout gameplay. Bloodlines 2 currently has five playable clans: the Brujah, Tremere, Toreador, Ventrue, and Malkavian, and every player starts off as a Thinblood. Initial powers are limited but will increase as you develop your character and join a clan; additional clans and powers will be added after the initial game release.

RESIDENT EVIL 8 (Capcom – PS5/Xbox Scarlett – Q1 2021???) – What do we know? There is going to be a new game released for the next generation of consoles. What else do we know? Basically nothing. Will you still be playing in first person perspective, like you did in Biohazard? No clue. When will it come out? No clue. Will RE8 continue RE7’s survival horror vibe? Probably, but really, no clue. Where will it be set? Haven’t the faintest…

Shinji Mikami, the creators of the original Resident Evil, has expressed interest in coming back to the series. Is he actually involved? No clue. To sum it up: there will be a new Resident Evil game, probably sometime after Fall 2020. But beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess.

FANTASTIC BEASTS and WHERE TO FIND THEM [Review]: Stirring the Pot.

Kevin “Pastor” Palma @eggrollko

The Harry Potter series is the defining fantasy story of my generation. While many of us are fans of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Marvel and DC, all of those are fantasy stories that have been passed on from previous generations. Harry Potter is ours and the movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them–written by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and directed by veteran HP director David Yates–is the first true attempt at expanding the world through a prequel and handing it off to a new generation.

As we’ve seen in those other franchises, however, that approach doesn’t have the greatest track record. Coupled with the fact that this movie’s title is taken from one of Harry Potter’s textbooks, I will fully admit that I had almost no interest in watching it. It seemed like it was just going to explore the wizarding with slight nods, but no meaningful connection, to the world we fell in love with.

Well, I can’t think of a time I’ve been so happy to be so wrong.

The movie follows Newt Scamander, the author of the aforementioned textbook, as he arrives in America as part of his quest to seek out, observe and document the magical beasts that inhabit the world. Unfortunately, through a series of mishaps, some of those beasts escape to wreak havoc on New York. Perhaps even more unfortunate is the fact that the escaped creatures the magical world at a time when secrecy is a top priority for security reasons.

As fun of an adventure as that is on the surface, this story has a lot of the same heart that made us so emotionally invested in Harry Potter’s journey and it could have fallen flat if the main cast weren’t fantastic. Eddie Redmayne as Newt, Katherine Waterston as Tina, Dan Fogler as Jacob and Alison Sudol as Queenie all have their own type of awkward charm mixed with a level of kindness; all this, despite an obvious underlying pain that gives off an air of likability that’s missing from many protagonists in movies today. Colin Farrell and Ezra Miller (Bullseye and Flash?) also deliver solid performances, but the protagonists are the stars of this movie.

As great as all that is, much of the enjoyment I had with this movie came from having a deep knowledge of the Potterverse. Much of the set-up going forward may be lost on those with only a slight familiarity with it; but it should still be a mostly enjoyable experience nonetheless.

As the first of an announced five movies set in Harry Potter’s wizarding world without Harry Potter in it, my biggest fear was that Fantastic Beasts could have felt like a cheap attempt to cash in on a popular franchise; yet, it ultimately proved me wrong and showed that there are plenty of other interesting stories to tell within this universe that don’t directly tie to Harry Potter himself. Although we’ll have to wait and see whether they successfully tell those stories in sequels to Fantastic Beasts, one things for sure: those movies have a fantastic foundation in this one. 4.25/5 Greedy Nifflers.

SDCC 2016 [Panel Reviews]: Kong-Skull Island / LEGO Movie-Batman / King Arthur-Legend of the Sword / Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

It wasn’t all superheroes, punches and tights in Hall H with the annual Warner Bros. Presentation at Comic-Con 2016. After DC/WB dropped the 3-headed juggernaut that was Justice League, Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad, the studio brought out the rest of their proud heavy-hitters in Kong: Skull Island, Lego Movie: Batman, King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Here are the Traveling Nerd’s presentation reviews!

KONG: SKULL ISLAND (Saturday) – We received our first trailer for the new Kong, a 1970’s-set King Kong story starring Tom Hiddleston (Thor), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), John Goodman (Roseanne) and none other than Straight Outta Compton‘s Dre & Eazy-E, Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell. The new film is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer). “Kong is film history. Kong is where genre met mainstream… [The film] takes place in the 70’s; what’s not cool about choppers, napalm and King Kong?,” boasted Vogt-Roberts on the classic character.

(Cont.) You could tell from the cast and director at the panel that a ton of fun was had filming–despite the hardest of conditions, which Hawkins sneakingly referred to as “guerilla/gorilla filmmaking.” But no star shined brighter this the ever-facetious Goodman, who had the cast and Hall H attendance rolling in their seats, while he talked about dealing with and working with the ginormous on-location diva. “[Kong]’s earned the right to be a little cranky. He was always 20 minutes late for make-up, but he was never drunk on set… You’d hear stories about riding on the top of taxicabs, or chartering boats–and putting it on the company–but he turned out to be an OK guy. He won’t do press, though. He won’t ever do press.” We’re just glad Goodman does. 4.25/5 Hairy Monkeys Agree. – Lance Paul

LEGO MOVIE: BATMAN (Saturday) – Thank God we have a joke-filled, batarang-tossing Batman to occupy our time till Justice League’s new, wittier Batfeck. LEGO Batman was such an undeniable hit from The LEGO Movie, chiefly because he never took himself too serious; a much-needed Battie that lovingly makes fun of himself… I mean come on, Batman is a rich guy that dresses like a bat and invites young boys to come live with him! The relationship between Will Arnett’s Bruce and Michael Cera’s Dick supplies the trailer (just down below) with some of its best laughs. Perhaps more admirably, director Chris McKay isn’t just limiting himself to the cream of Gotham’s rogues gallery crop, despite an overarching baddie in a Joker beautifully played by Zach Galfianakis (The Hangover). 4/5 Master LEGO Builders Agree. – Lance Paul

KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD (Saturday) – A lone Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Pacific Rim) was in full strides, getting the massive Hall H crowd excited for the world premiere of his new medieval epic’s first true trailer. From the footage down below, King Arthur looks every bit as frenetic and deadpan as the lot of director Guy Ritchie’s films. And like the majority of his filmography the degenerates will rise. “You meet him and he’s a pimp. Just kidding–he just lives in a brothel,” joked Hunnam as he described his take on Arthur as a street kid who eventually rises to be king. Hey, we finally have a retelling that rivals the original Excalibur (and allows us to forget The First Knight and King Arthur, too). 4.5/5 Cosplaying Wizards Agree. – Lance Paul

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM (Saturday) – True pandemonium took over Hall H to finish out Warner Bros. slot with the Fantastic Beasts presentation, when Eddie Redmayne handed out special magic wands to everyone in attendance. No easy task when you have 6,500 geeeeeeeeeeekkksss! But what a way to make a presence felt. After every non-hoarder threw their free wands for a whopping $50 on EBay, Redmayne invited his director and the rest of his cast to join him on stage. David Yates, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Colin Farrell, the new Flash Ezra Miller and Dan Fogler helped reveal the world exclusive trailer of the new Harry Potter spin-off…

(Cont.) The prequel tells the story of magizoologist Newt Scamander on his way to the Magical Congress of the United States of America in the 20’s, where and when, unfortunately, all his magical beasts are released in the world–forcing him to collect them all again. They spoke on how just hands-on J.K. Rowling was with the production and the scriptwriting. “Nothing gets in front of the camera before her checking it first,” recanted Farrell on a cloak he was set to wear that didn’t meet her standards. Overall this panel was enjoyable and the footage amazing, even if we had indeed seen most of it already. Plus, getting your very own wand nearly rivals what Star Wars did last year with free lightsabers. 3.75/5 Sock Dolby’s Agree. – Lance Paul

INJUSTICE 2 (NetherRealm/WB Interactive – PS4, X1 – 2017) – GameSpot’s live E3 stage had Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon on to talk about his next gen fighting game, Injustice 2. To start off, this game has improved leaps and bounds from the prior edition–despite how awesome the first one was. The gameplay shown included Superman, Supergirl, Aquaman, Batman, General Grodd, and Red Lantern Atrocitus.

The biggest add-on to the game shown was the games new gear system. Ed revealed that the new DC fighting game will feature loot drops and gear, win or lose, that can alter your character’s appearance and make your character stronger. “There’s a moulding so to speak, as you keep getting gear you keep deciding if you want to use it and if you want to focus on offense or defense or enhance certain moves or unlock certain moves.”

(cont.) The game footage went through a range of different armor choices for most the characters, and showed the ability to change armor colors. For instance, if you want Red Crimson Sun Superman you can create it. We also got a glimpse of some of the characters’ “fatalities” which have definitely improved from the first.

The only downsides I watched sitting through this otherwise enjoyable experience: Aquaman looked like an extra from a gay porn video like you see on the fuckedgay website here, and Superman looked like he had just come off of a creatine bender — all bloated in blue velour. From the little bit of cutscenes shown, we can assume that Superman is still in power and Batman is still trying to stop his friend from ruling the world.

LEGO DIMINESIONS: WAVE 6 EXPANSION (Traveller’s Tales/WB Interactive – PS4, X1 – September 30) – Witches, Gremlins and E.T. oh my! After numerous rumors and leaks it has finally been made official about all the new characters and adventures coming to the LEGO world: Sonic the Hedgehog, Adventure Time, Harry Potter, E.T., Gremlins, Goonies, Beatlejuice, etc. The new expansion packs will release on September 30th with additional new releases stretching all through the summer of next year.

(cont.) Although I was in the Disney Infinity fan club, call me impressed. For starters, I love how immersive and collector happy this game is. In just the second year of content WB is not making you go out of your way to buy a whole new system. Yes–you heard it–all you have to do is buy one of the new expansion packs and it updates your current system for the new characters and a new multi-battle arena with full game modes. I was able to get my hands on one, “Capture the Flag”. It was a ton of fun, as I skydived onto Harry Potter’s Quidditch field as Finn from Adventure Time and outraced E.T. and one of the new lady Ghostbusters to capture a flag. Also, those lucky to see the footage and gameplay at E3 received a Green Arrow exclusive lego fig for the new game.

Note: Bible score is leveled on a 1-5 scale, based on how we felt about the E3 video and/or demo impressions of the game. Subject to change upon release.
