TOP 5 FILMS in 4DX [2018 Review]: You Can Do It.

Lights, camera, whoaaaaa shiiiit!!! 2018 was the year I couldn’t sit still. Of course I’m not talking about my home life (as that couldn’t be further from the truth), but I’m talking my #1 movie-going method of choice this past year: 4DX. As a tribute to all the geeky greatness I was able to immerse myself in, here are my Top 5 film experiences in the format, all of which were viewed at the LA Live Regal Cinemas in Downtown, Los Angeles.

(Scores are based on the overall 4DX experience.)

1. Mission Impossible: Fallout – MI:6 was not only my favorite film of 2018, it was also the best film I saw in 4DX– and it wasn’t even close. Some moviegoing critics have stated that 4DX is a cool gimmick you do once. Some movies in this screening format add some light sprays of water during fistfights, some additional lighting for certain characters on screen, and some stirring seats for more involved scenes. This experience, however, takes you through Tom.. err Ethan’s crazyeffing world. Like, seriously. The amount of pain and death-defying risk this man — both IRL and fiction (or are they both the same) — is willing to put himself through is unexplainable. After the first 20 minutes of chess moves, the next 2-hours of MI:6 felt like a full-on Virtual Reality ride at a PG-18 Disney. – 5/5

2. The Incredibles 2 – I never imagined a cartoon movie or any form of animation working in the 4DX format. I didn’t even know it was a thing. Silly me. Watching The Incredibles 2 in those ice-gliding seats was a thrill, and there’s no doubt that they Disnified this experience, ramping up all the usual cooling, heating, and spritzing effects to the Nth degree. It almost makes me wonder if Brad Bird, at any point in his writing and directing the film, was consulted by executive producers that insert wonderful moments that would coincide in the 4th Dimension to the max.

3. Deadpool 2 – Maybe the coolest scene in Deadpool 2 using the 4DX technology is also arguably the film’s most hilarious: Wade Wilson assembles his merry band of X-Forcians on their first mission — skydiving onto/into an ultra heavy armored cargo truck thingy to help retrieve one of their lost muties. The cool breeze pumped through our “parachutes” and slow-stirring seat movement was damn near perfect just before everything went to bloody hell. While DP2 offers a mega ton of surprise cameos and not so surprising social commentary (tee-hee!), you might be just surprised at how tubular the film is in the 4th Dimension. Tell ’em Cable sent ya. – 4.25/5

4. Avengers: Infinity War – Who knew soaring in virtual space could actually be chilly thanks to super-pumped in AC vents? Hell, even cool cats like Stephen Vincent Strange feel immersively powerful with 4DX strobe effects, and peeping Pete Parker giddity up a colossal Children of Thanos-steered ring is the thing! Swaying chairs and neon strobelights might sound like a heavy distraction, but they def added a unique web-spin to any scenes involving teleportation, levitation or magic. I had as much fun as scare watching AIW in 4DX, physically celebrating — lightning strike complete — side-by-side with the Odinson upon smash from the Stormbreaker, as the Stark-Tech level seats actually give you a sense of scale unprecedented in cinema. – 4/5

5. The Meg – With action scenes as intense imagined, 4DX goers caught great air condition intensity during the many helicopter scenes. But once we enter the deep ocean in the valiant crew’s search for the whereabouts of the ruthless 75-foot megalodon, that’s when all our personal ships hit the coral reef! The 4DX effects spaz The Eff out–the theater even warns you beforehand that water intensity will be higher than usual. Sure, you wouldn’t go home Sea World soaked, but getting wet and often is an element that surely ramps up the experience. – 3.5/5
