Non-Marvel Studios Marvel film news was released today on two very different upcoming releases. Spider-Man spin-off Silver and Black, featuring Spider-Man characters Silver Sable and Black Cat, is going to be directed by The Secret Life of Bees writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood. She’s no stranger to upcoming comic book adaptations, being slated to direct the pilot for Cloak and Dagger. With this film and the upcoming Venom having no connection to the upcoming Spider-man: Homecoming , it’s surprising they are even being made at all. Let’s hope they can be of quality and not end up like the Catwoman movie, which had no connection to the comics whatsoever. Silver and Black is being released in October of 2018.
It’s not just Sony jumping into the obscure comic book character movie market. The director of Fox’s New Mutants, Josh Boone, says “We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains.” Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones and Split actress Anya Taylor-Joy have been cast as Wolfsbane and Magik, respectively. Henry Zaga is reportedly going to play Sunspot. Boone says that he was a huge Stephen King and Marvel Comics fan as a kid and that comic book readers should not be worried about what he’s going to do. Artist Bill Sienkiewicz‘s tenure on the New Mutants book, along with writer Chris Claremont, is going to be a huge influence on the film. The Fault in Our Stars director begins production on the film this July.
