ASSASSIN’S CREED ODYSSEY (Ubisoft Montreal – PS4, X1, PC – TBA) – Assassin’s Creed, the long standing franchise by Ubisoft, that has been met with an equal amount of praise and criticism over the years, is set to release yet another title. This yet unnamed (this JUST IN: the game is called Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, and may drop in 2018) title will bring the total to a whopping 21 games since the original release in 2007; there have been 10 on consoles and 10 releases on other platforms.

Series fatigue is a term that had been thrown around at length prior to 2017’s Assassin’s Creed: Origins, which was quite an overhaul. New elements and a bold, untouched new setting breathed fresh life into the franchise. Ancient Egypt provided just enough lore and mystery that it kept gamers interested and wanting to go further, to explore deeper, and invest more, unlike previous titles in settings they’ve already delved much time into, or simply didn’t care about. The game kicked butt with our critics.
So, what’s next for Assassin’s Creed? What place in time are we going to tread next? All rumor and evidence point to Ancient Greece as the setting, and while not immediately thrown into giddy fits of excitement over the news, I’m not totally put off. Ancient Greece has tons to offer historically, as well as mystery. The AC franchise has already spent a great deal of time introducing the Civilization that came before, the great beings of power that held the Pieces of Eden, even went so far as to assign them the names of Roman God equivalent to their Greek counterparts, Juno, Minerva, etc.
Hopefully there will be something to that, as I love the larger overarching story that the franchise all but abandoned after AC3. I was hoping for a turn in The Viking Age, with the success of God of War and the subtle hints of a Viking connection in Assassin’s Creed: Rogue, but alas, it appears that Ancient Greece is where we are headed. What are your thoughts? Are you excited to, perhaps, future influence the Battle of Troy? Aiding the Spartans at Thermopylae? Or are you still boycotting the franchise until they take it to Feudal Japan? With a pair of mystery games on the Ubisoft E3 agenda, start placing your bets now.
