FROM DUSK TILL DAWN: The Series [Premiere Episode Review]: Bites & Pieces.

The fact that Super Producer/Director JJ Abrams has joined forces with one of the current best directors out there — and recent Oscar winner — in Alfonso Cuaron has had me chomping at the bit for this show.

The story goes: a convict named Tate (Jake McLaughlin) is sprung from prison by a group led by a man named Winter (veteran actor Delroy Lindo) to protect a little girl named Bo (Johnny Sequoyah). Bo has some special kind of abilities that have some unknown baddie organization trying to abduct her.

The pilot (written and directed by Cuaron) has his signature action and wonderful camera work all over it. The show is a fast-paced chase that doesn’t let up very much; and while we aren’t given much time for character development, the relationship between Tate and Bo has a complicated but curious appeal to it. My only major problem with this premise so far is Winter is shown to be a man of means (a giant cargo plane!) and money.. yet, he can’t even afford any kind of security detail to protect himself or Bo?

The paranormal aspect is what I wanted to draw me in, but in the pilot it’s only briefly demonstrated. And although the show is successful in not handing out too much exposition right away, the importance of Bo and her origin of powers is enough to keep interest. Throw in a delicious plot reveal in the end and you best believe the “geek goggles” will be on for yet another week.
