Due to a sudden family tragedy, Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder is stepping away from the Justice League. The film, in pre-production and still scheduled for a November 17, 2017 release date, will now see two-time Avengers director Joss Whedon at the healm.
While the majority of Justice League is finished, it’s an interesting scenario: could this once King of Marvel be the DC Cinematic Universe’s saving grace? Let’s hope the Buffy / Firefly creator –to which many Comic-Con flocking fangirls and boys would call geek genius — gives the ultra-criticized, too serious tone of the current DC the quirky facelift it needs.
Whedon is also set to take on Batgirl once his duties with JL (starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as the Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and…Henry Cavill as Superman?) are complete.
Early word on the Wonder Woman film, directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot is very strong. Throw in Whedon’s touch to the follow-up DC film (that still needs to some some re-shoots before the editing process hits), and Warner Bros could see itself recovering from a trio of critical disasters in no time.
That said, we wish Zack and his wife Deborah the best through their terrible loss. While many (hell, 99.3% of) nerds disagree, Man of Steel and BvS: Dawn of Justice pleased this particular geek “Monsignor”. You can bet I’m pulling for him, his family, and the “World’s Greatest Superheroes!” – Travis Moody
