Nerd Movies Need Loving Too.

Oh, who we fooling! Nerd movies rule the world! So much that many big studio filmmakers these days are now relegated to shooting for alternative outlets such as Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and even XBOX Live.

Hey look who the dweebs are now! Like your favorite rapper’s rapper Silkk The Shocker one time said, “It Ain’t My Fault!”

But, now, with the terrific hipster Spider-Man, Dark Knight swansong and instantly masterful Avengersnow out of the way (whew!), there are actually some PGC (read: Popular Geek Culture) flicks out this fall that plan on packing a more independent punch.

Forget Bruce Wayne. I’m Bruce Willis, bitch.

We begin with Looper, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s journey to look more like Bruce Willis than anyone should ever want to. Perhaps the coolest part of writer and director Rian Johnson’s lil’ diddy about mobsters who finish off their victims in the future, is the intense make-up job. No, Willis isn’t all of a sudden Moonlighting once again. It’s just that Kazuhiro Tsuji (Hellboy, Transformers: ROTF) was astonishingly able to make both John Blake and John McClain appear to be the same looper — just 30 years apart.

Lots of high praise appears to be coming from the cast about this film, which makes me wonder why I cared so much about Total Recall the past couple Comic Cons instead. Yes, I tend to blow up flicks that end up shitty; see Spirits of Vengeance. Oh, wait, don’t! Don’t! Oh no, don’t do that! You catch my drift.

Check for Looper September 28th, and perhaps only if you haven’t yet seen Dredd 3D.

Yes, “Dreddful”could have easily been a fun pun to play with, but it’s doubtful many film journalists will get to sling those words after hearing some pretty surprising praise from both fans and critics who checked it last month in San Diego. While I don’t know much about the comic — or even Mr. Stallone’s, ahem, “Dreddful” 1995 film — this sounds very much like a great Saturday night with pizza. The trailer’s pretty cool too:

Punisher 2, starring Liam Neeson, comes out October 5th. Oh, wait, you’re meaning to tell me the name of the movie is Taken 2? Coulda fooled me. Regardless, while Taken was absolutely one of the most over-the-top actioneers in a long time, there’s denying its incredibly steep level of bad-assery. The geek relation for Taken 2 here, is that this film series should have just been called Punisher from the get-go. Our homeboy Neeson would have little trouble sporting the skull on his shirt when hunting down those goons who kidnapped (rather than killed — the primary difference here) his little princess. You’re not going out on a limb if you agree that Bryan Mills is the most impressive superhero in movies today.

Which takes us the same night to Frankenweenie. Tim Burton. Disney. Nuff said.

November 2nd also features another rocker from Micky Mouse World, as Wreck-It Ralph is the only other film from Tron that is about video games — not merely video games made into a movie. Thankfully, Disney was resourceful enough to snag some awfully difficult licenses (Dude. Bowser!) to give these video game villains a vigorating new-life-relapse. Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA finally reaches his dream, as if producing arguably some of the greatest hip-hop music ever and appearing on “Californication” wasn’t enough, when he stars and directs a genre he so much fell in love with creating those beats. Both Russell Crowe and former WWE Champion Dave Bautista star as mercenaries in The Man With the Iron Fists across Lucy Liu and Bobby Digital’s shoguns, with maybe a clip from “The Duel of the Iron Mic.”

Watch. Just watch:

Hey, anything that sounds like Skyrim just has to be good. No?

  1. Hip, fun, educational… cool blog dude. Looking fwd to X-Men 1st Class 2 but im sure that’s next year.

  2. I have to agree with you Moody; Punisher would have been a better name for the film and Bryan Mills is the Superhero of the Millennia. I had the pure pleasure of watching retired operative Mills superhero skills TV this week, when a friend and co-worker from Dish, recommended “Taken”. He knows I love Liam Neeson, and would have loved being a CIA agent. Once the action started; is all I really need to say. I had a blast watching a father, who obviously did not intend to allow anyone to stand between him and his daughter. That is how I would be if that was a member of my family. Since we were both away on business this week, it was nice to have an alternative way to watch a great movie like Dish Online. I hope that anyone who has not seen this film watches it!
