EMERALD CITY COMIC-CON [#ECCC ’17 News]: Valiant Comics.

As revealed yesterday at Emerald City Comicon 2017, Valiant is proud to announce “MASSACRE” – a new, four-part assault beginning this July in HARBINGER RENEGADE #5! This summer, THE ROAD TO HARBINGER WARS 2 – Valiant’s seismic 2018 crossover event – starts here as multiple Harvey Award nominee Rafer Roberts (Plastic Farm) and superstar artist Darick Robertson (The Boys, Transmetropolitan) bring a newer, deadlier, and brutally efficient H.A.R.D. Corps crashing down on America’s renegade team of teenage superhumans!

“The death that occurs in HARBINGER RENEGADE #5 is going to have a profound effect on the trajectory of the Valiant Universe for at least the next year,” said Valiant Editor-in-Chief Warren Simons. “HARBINGER has always been about the stakes and real-world consequences of power in practice. The events of ‘MASSACRE’ are going to rip through the Harbinger Renegades like a shockwave. This is a key moment that will directly lay the groundwork to HARBINGER WARS 2.”

“Everything we’ve already done in HARBINGER RENEGADE and everything we are going to do is akin to placing bricks along a path,” said writer Rafer Roberts. “We are building a road; a road that leads to war.”

Toyo Harada’s former protege – Alexander Solomon, a “psiot” with the ability to predict and analyze potential futures – has been waiting for this moment. With the Harbinger Renegades – Peter Stanchek, Faith, Kris Hathaway, and Torque – now reunited as a result of his covert manipulations, his ultimate gambit can now begin. But he’s not the only one who has been watching. Major Charlie Palmer has just re-assigned a new division of the militarized psiot hunters codenamed H.A.R.D. Corps to active duty…and they’re about to bring a torrent of blood and calamity roaring into the streets of a major American metropolis for an all-out firefight.

The Harbinger Renegades. Livewire. Alexander Solomon. Generation Zero. Toyo Harada. Secret Weapons. Imperium. None of them are safe…and, when the smoke clears, a pivotal Valiant hero will become the first sacrifice of the massive Harbinger War that is to come.

Plus: Also coming in the pages of “MASSACRE”…discover the true face of the antagonist that will bring HARBINGER WARS 2 to bear in 2018! The first appearance of Valiant’s most formidable villain yet happens right here, only in HARBINGER RENEGADE #5!

This summer, the Valiant Universe reaches a critical turning point as the H.A.R.D. Corps incites a “MASSACRE” that will reverberate for years to come…and each of the Harbinger Renegades stand on guard to honor the fall of a comrade in arms. Rafer Roberts and Darick Robertson begin THE ROAD TO HARBINGER WARS 2 with a bang, only in HARBINGER RENEGADE #5 – coming in July!

For more on what awaits in “MASSACRE”, join writer Rafer Roberts alongside Valiant Editor-in-Chief Warren Simons and Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani this weekend for the VALIANT: THE ROAD TO HARBINGER WARS 2 panel presentation TOMORROW, March 5th at 2:30 p.m. PT in room TCC301!

As revealed Thursday at The Washington Post in advance of Emerald City Comicon 2017 (ECCC), Valiant is proud to announce BLOODSHOT SALVATION #1 – the FIRST ISSUE of A BLOCKBUSTER NEW ONGOING SERIES coming this September from New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Lemire (Bloodshot Reborn, Moon Knight) and extraordinary artists Lewis LaRosa & Mico Suayan (Bloodshot Reborn)! A bloody and vengeful new era for Bloodshot begins this fall as Ray Garrison escapes his violent past to build the one thing he never thought he’d earn: a family. But when a hateful secret from his true love’s past threatens their fragile peace, Bloodshot will be forced to run headlong into a barrage of blood, bullets, and broken bones for a revenge-fueled assault that will have crushing consequences for those he holds most dear…

Set in two timelines – the present day (with art by LaRosa) and the future (with art by Suayan) – Jeff Lemire’s epic saga begins anew in BLOODSHOT SALVATION #1! Plus: The introduction of a major new force in the Valiant pantheon starts here as Bloodshot’s daughter, Jessie, makes her milestone first appearance after an initial cameo in the VALIANT: X-O MANOWAR FCBD SPECIAL, arriving in stores this Free Comic Book Day!

“I think anyone who becomes a parent, their world view instantly changes. [Bloodshot] is no different,” series writer Jeff Lemire told The Washington Post. “Being this character that comes from such a history of violence and has so much violence built into him, I think that would be terrifying. You wouldn’t want to bring that into your child’s life at all. I think that tension is exactly what the book is kind of about.”

Now: In the arms of his beloved girlfriend Magic, Bloodshot has finally found hope for the future…in the form the couple’s unborn child. But when Magic’s estranged family – a cruel and sadistic clan of white supremacist criminals – re-emerge to lay claim to their lost daughter, Bloodshot will be pushed back to the brink of madness, mayhem, and warfare…

Soon: Eight years from today, Bloodshot’s daughter has inherited her father’s incredible abilities. Hunted by a high-tech kill squad called Omen, Jessie must hone her powers…and learn how to survive before the world is swallowed whole by the darkness that now pervades America…

In the wake of X-O MANOWAR (2017) #1, the next great Valiant ICONS launch of 2017 starts here on September 28th in BLOODSHOT SALVATION #1 – an epic and essential turning point for Valiant’s unstoppable soldier! Across 2017, look for FAITH, SHADOWMAN, and HARBINGER WARS 2 to join the ICONS line-up with major new series announcements as the summer continues.

For more information on what the future holds for BLOODSHOT SALVATION, join superstar writer Jeff Lemire, Valiant Editor-in-Chief Warren Simons, and Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani alongside a cast of Valiant’s top talents at Seattle’s Emerald City Comicon for the VALIANT: THE ROAD TO HARBINGER WARS 2 panel presentation TOMORROW, March 5th at 2:30 p.m. PT in room TCC301!

You know the difference between me and other people? When being accused of “phoning it in”, they’ll act shocked and insulted. Not I.. I’m phoning it in with this review. From my.. shellphone hahahaha.. Get it?! It’s like cellphone, but with the word shell in it. Because it’s set in paleolithic times..

(Bad) joke aside, if you enjoy puns — and, man, are there a lot — loved the Flintstones, are the type affected by the recent “nostalgia-type” wave of marketing or any combination of the three, well are you in luck. Unfortunately, aside from the occasional pun, I was never into the Flintstones as a kid and am mostly “meh” towards the nostalgia cash-in wave (where the hell is my Centurions movie? It would be amazing with today’s VFX). As for the comic itself, if you’re familiar with the Flintstones, it’s exactly what you remember/are expecting, only with writer Mark Russell‘s (Prez, God Is Disappointed In You) updated puns and references: shellphone, rocktagon MMA, art hipsters, etc. If you’re not familiar, then it’s about a stone age family that… Know what? Just search online for “Flintstones intro”.

Only real thing that I found kind of interesting is that Barney and Fred are now part of what seems to be this post-war PTSD support group for veterans. No; not kidding. Oh, and remember Mr. Slate, Fred’s boss? There’s hints of him being a sadistic sociopath. So there’s that. I really liked the artwork from Steve Pugh (Animal Man). I will say that. Wilma and Betty are still hot as hell and on an interesting note (or maybe so SJWS won’t bitch about tropes in case they’re bored that day?), it looks like Fred has been getting ready to face Rock Lesnar (hahaaaa puns). Not sure about Barney, they don’t show him in swimwear. I’m sure this book will find its audience–the nostalgic type–but I am not part of said audience.

What’s up, peoples? “The Belser” returns to more comic-reviewing madness after a much needed vacation. But enough basking in my own glory. Let’s get down to ‘bidness’, shall we? Today’s review is part of the ongoing Civil War II storyline that’s dominating Marvel right now, focusing on everyone’s favorite Netflix villain, Wilson Fisk. Yeah, you know him better as the Kingpin.

Here’s the story: After a lengthy stint in San Francisco, Wilson returns to the NY Nitty with the intention of taking back control of the underworld. He finds, however, that things have changed with the advent of the new Civil War. Fellows crime lords like The Owl and Madame Masque are scared. The heroes threaten them at every turn. Add in a new sheepish criminal named Janus, and Kingpin seems poised to reclaim his crown. The thing that impressed me about this book is the writing by Matthew Rosenberg (12 Reasons to Die). Here, he portrays Wilson as an anti-hero, not unlike a Scorsese character. Sure, he’s still a ruthless criminal and master manipulator, but he’s also a man of his word.

My favorite panels are the exchange between him and a pastry store owner named Armand. Kingpin takes on a personal favor because Armand is grateful to Wilson for helping him and his community. What I didn’t like was the artwork by Ricardo Lopez Ortiz (Wolf). I found it to be too experimental and “herky jerky” for such a mainstream comic. Regardless, Fisk’s on-point characterization made this an enjoyable read that I shall continue to follow. 3/5 Bibles.

Oh Shadowman, where have you been my whole life?

OK, that might be a tiny stretch of my feelings, but honestly, this tie-in to Valiant’s current main event had me hooked from the start. Quick synopsis: it’s hundreds of years after the world of the dead tried to invade and failed, leading to an aftermath where it’s basically hell on earth. One stronghold from the undead still exists and has a symbiotic relationship with a town built along its walls. This pretty much means the humans send a few occasional sacrifices and get to keep living off the mystic power.

Well, that all changes. Kaia is our heroine and also a sacrifice. She gets to the city of Sanctuary (the undead place) and everything changes! Jody Houser (Faith) and Rafer Roberts (Plastic Farm) do an amazing job of setting a fun, dark, almost Buffy the Vampire Slayer tone to the comic, while, Robert Gill‘s (Book of Death) art just enhances the feel. His take on demons is just gorgeous! I honestly wish HBO would adapt this next when GoT ends–yes, a darn comic event tie-in. 4.75/7 Circles of Hell.

Bounty #1 is the story of two gorgeous sister/bestie criminals named Nina and Georgie. They start out as intergalactic Robin Hoods called The Gaflies, anticorporate heroines whose identities are wiped with their sidekick and digital world wiz, Viv. Eventually they wind up as struggling bounty hunters, with someone nefarious about to uncover their felonious past.

The comic’s visual world building is like a bubblegum dream, full of vibrancy and oddities and the characters are nothing but fun. Nina is the flashy one who looks kind of like “Punk Storm” and fights like an action movie hero, while Georgie holds down the business end of their motley crew. Viv the wiz travels through a virtual digital reality even stranger than the intergalactic one they live in.

Bounty is a pop version of a scifi cyberpunk novel, and a feast for the eyes, totally cool and really damn pretty at the same time! Written for Dark Horse Comics by the talented Kurt Wiebe (Rat Queens), alongside brilliant art work by Mindy Lee, intensely enhanced by colorist Leonardo Olea (Fairy Quest), Bounty #1 elevates a girl power tale into a legitimate work of art. 4/5 Bibles.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were looking at a relaunched and revamped Justice League in the form of the New 52. If you’re like myself, you have probably read more than a few of these. In fact, I believe I’ve read at least eight JL births, rebirths and abortions. In this particular case, Justice League Rebirth #1 begins very similar, yet quite different.

True to form, JLR holds rigidly to the cookie cutter Super Team Uniting Formula. In that there is an overwhelming enemy, that no single (or even in this case a Superman-less Justice League) hero could face. While the team battles this insurmountable horror, artist-turned-writer/artist Bryan Hitch (The Ultimates), carries a familiar Justice League banter between the teammates. Unlike the New 52’s “forced to argue amongst themselves in order to create sense of angst” and piping, the Justice League Rebirth‘s characters interact as old friends or teammates would after years of battling together and interacting. Hitch’s pencils are very clean, with a good level of detail. His conveyance of battle and action is smooth and believable. Plus, did I mention a distinct lack of piping?

The twist to this story is that Superman has died and The League is facing a supreme battle without him. Well, at least the Superman of this Earth. Unbeknownst to the team, the Superman from another Earth is alive, but hoping to play stay at home dad to this world’s Lois Lane and her son. Will Clark stay at home and let Lois bring home the bacon? Will the Justice League find some way to defeat this “alien and horrific creature”?? You will have to read to find out, but I will tell you that it is a well drawn and written book, with nods to each character appropriately. They even found a use for Aquaman, so it can’t be bad! 3.5/5 Bibles.

Stop whatever you are doing, invent a time machine to travel to the release of Mockingbird #5 and please tell me WHERE IN THE NAME OF HOLY HELL THE PING-PONG BALLS ARE GOING!!! But in all seriousness, go out and pick up a copy of Mockingbird #1. By far, this is one of the most intelligent, insightful and insane pieces to grace the newsstands, virtual or tangible.

Writer Chelsea Cain weaves a bold new look for a once minor character, giving her fantastic extensions without dying her roots. While Barbara “Bobbi” Morse can still hogtie criminals with Gordian knots, her chemical romance seems to be making her more human than human. Blending a few shots of Infinity formula with a super soldier serum taken straight out of the ice makes a frozen concoction that helps me hang on… the edge of my seat as I eagerly await the next issue. The story is incredibly crafted, using the right amount of TLC to make the WTF seems as simple as ABC. More accurately, it’s easy as Pi. With so many layers, this puzzle box forces one to read and reread, uncovering new treasures on every pass.

Speaking of treasures, artist Kate Niemczyk is a true gem,
incorporating action and irreverence into one fantastic panel after another. From the Kubrick carpet to the Cthulhu crew-neck, the optical Easter eggs are like candy from a windowless van for the mind’s eye. Not to be dismissed is color artist Rachelle Rosenberg. She hits the tone right in the bull’s-eye, almost as if her color palate was stolen from Clint Barton’s quiver. They are like a visual Voltron, forming ferociously from Cain’s material. All together, Mockingbird #1 is a refreshing work of light-hearted intensity that will tickle your neurons and question your health coverage.

TRANSFORMERS #50 - IDW

With More Than Meets The Eye #50 touching upon this week, your Traveling Nerd Apostle decided to reflect back at last month’s Transformers #50. Why? Because GodHatesGeeks is why.

This double-sized ish begins a brave new story, “All Hail Optimus,” which takes Prime’s decision to withdraw from planet Earth. Splintering and falling apart (along with Galvatron’s constant aggression), OP plants his flag and takes the Earth under his protection. Yet, how will Earth take to a new overlord only recently finding freedom from Megatron’s dictatorship?

John Barber (Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Fantastic Four) does an excellent job painting the Transformer’s world in shades of political gray, which seems like perfect timing. After “All Hail Magetron,” IDW did away with the good vs. evil of the Transformers world, instead painting characters with true paradigms of virtue and evil with in-between allegiances. For example, you have usual Decepticon Soundwave who just wants to live in peace having recently being duped by Galvatron. Or even Prime, who has never lost his freedom-loving goals, deals with the guilt and feeling of responsibility for poor choices that have had bad reactions. Barber implores impressive rationale for all characters, allowing you to side with even the most wrong of choices.

This milestone issue is also very well written and paced, making a superb jumping on place for new and old robot fans. And yet while the larger issue does include a ton of various inkers and colorists, ‘Formers #50 is fully illustrated by the talented Andrew Griffith (G.I. JOE). He draws tight emotional scenes with impressive panel arrangement and dynamic scenes of cinematic horror.

See you next month when I finally pick up the right Transformers #50 that came out last week. 4.25/5 Robo Thumbs Up!

What makes a person a hero? What makes a person “sacrifice” themselves for ideas bigger than themselves? Do some grow up wanting, learning and training themselves to be a hero? Does it just happen from a random occurrence in time? Are heroes born and bred out of blood? Or…can anyone become a hero?

As Jim Gordon continues the mantle of Batman in Gotham — while Bruce gets over his Post-Traumatic Joker syndrome — Detective Comics #50 sets him on the case of a very peculiar and conflicted serial killer. Writer Peter J. Tomasi (Green Lantern Corps) really puts the reader in the mind of a homicide detective, as readers try to figure out the killer’s motives along with Gordan; yeah–I still can’t get myself to call him “Batman”. It’s a classic suspense tale of serial killer “pattern following”, with Gordan continuing to track the killer through landmarks until he bestows upon that final piece: Heroes–people who become heroic from circumstance.

However, Gordan still has to figure out the “why.” Why is this mad man targeting these heroes? Once you read and discover the killer’s purpose, you’ll realize just how much this guy has lost his grip with reality. If nothing else in D.C. #50, the messes you’ll be cleaning will likely have you pondering why “God hates geeks”. 4/5 Bibles.

A&A: THE ADVENTURES OF ARCHER & ARMSTRONG #1 – Valiant

Friends, I bring tremendous news: history’s most depraved, super-strong, immortal reprobate Armstrong; and the world’s most naïve — yet dangerous — psiot Archer return to our comic store stands this week with Valiant’s A&A: The Adventures of Archer & Armstrong #1!

Yes, the best comic, from the best comics publisher, is back; and I know that most of you couldn’t be happier.

Long have we wondered what happens next for our daring duo since their hilarious crossover with Quantum and Woody, and after their vital contribution to the forces of The Valiant, and now we know: Armstrong gets drunk, climbs into his magical bottomless satchel looking for some priceless Islay Whisky, and Archer has to climb in after him. It’s a story we can all relate to.

A&Apreview

Rafer Roberts (Plastic Farm, X-O Manowar) ably picks up from previous Archer and Armstrong scribe Fred Van Lente, imbuing the characters with every bit of dysfunction we’ve come to love. This is all writ large across the vibrant and action-packed splash panels and stylised, sharp-edged lines of the artwork of David Lafuente (Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man). It’s all cartoonish good fun, as Armstrong is a man on a mission, seemingly oblivious to the ancient threats poised to exact revenge for when he banished them to the bottom of his satchel.

Lafuente’s Spider-Man pedigree is on display neatly, with Archer’s acrobatic fight moves popping off the page, and goblins aplenty adorning the landscape. As usual from Valiant, this is great stuff and I’ll need more, possibly in the next few days, maybe even before this one wears off. Without a hint of exaggeration, I can assure you that buying this comic book will essentially be the best decision you’ve ever made. I mean; will it make you rich? Unlikely, especially if you keep spending money on comics. Will it cure you of disease? Probably not, you’ll still die somehow. Will you learn much from it? Definitely not; it’s a bit silly.

See what I mean? It’s perfect.
