ANIMAL CROSSING (Nintendo EAD – Switch – 2019) – It’s been six years since the last mainline Animal Crossing game, the 3DS’s New Leaf. It’s also been nearly 11 years since the series’ last console entry, City Folk on the Wii. So imagine the internet’s collective surprise and excitement in September when a new game for the Switch was teased in the same Nintendo Direct that revealed Isabelle as a fighter in Smash Ultimate

But since then, Nintendo has given us crickets. We know from the teaser that the game will be released sometime later this year and that series stalwart Tom Nook will make sure you “have a nice, new place to live”, indicating that he will still be running his real estate agency, Nook’s Homes. We can also assume that his nephews will continue to run the store and that we will be able to decorate our home, fish and all the other gameplay elements that we’re used to.

If there was ever a series that seems tailor-made for the Switch, it’s Animal Crossing. It’s a game that lends itself well to both long sessions at home and short spurts on the go. Hopefully Nintendo’s E3 Direct will finally shed some light on this new entry and any possible new mechanics.
