CALL OF DUTY – WWII / DESTINY 2 / EXTINCTION [E3 2017]: Maximum Activision!

“Deacon E” Esko
@eskobts

Remember that Call of Duty from way back when? Well, guess what: it’s back. Almost exactly as you remember it.. if you’re old enough to remember it. Call of Duty: WWII‘s weapons are heavy, the world is gritty, and you’re covered in blood, but it’s not your own. Private Ryan just got his head blown off, and you were whispering sweet nothings of German destruction in his ear. If you don’t move fast you’re gonna take a bullet too.

And this time around, you’ll hold onto every bullet.

In Call of Duty: WWII, there is no more health regeneration. You’ve gotta trust your team and your keen sense of sight to find health packs if you want to live through this war. Sledgehammer’s graphics have been upgraded to amazing levels, and their audio will immerse you in every battle. The best part is, beyond the gun fire, you’re now part of the ground-shaking action instead of being embedded in cutscenes and cinematics. Looks great, feels great, sounds great (i.e. some of the haunting score and chain-clanging FX might remind you of Dishonored). Upgraded, updated, and blown the fuck up on all fronts. But at its core, it’s the same Call of Duty we started with. The war has come full circle and we’re right back in the fight of our lives. 4/5 Bibles. – Esko Robinson

Upon arriving to the Deacon E and yours truly’s BCD hands-on demo of Destiny 2, we were greeted by a developer with the good ol’ “you’ll be playing today on PC today.” Yikes. Scorching through a deadly sci-fi shooter via keyboard and mouse is so not my jam. But we did our best, barely dying through out 20+ minute demo without much of a hiccup. With Xbox One X not ready for demo yet, it was obvious that Activision wanted us to see D2 in all its 4K (and 60fps) glory. Destiny 2 sure is pretty–and was indeed one of the best demos I played at the conference thus far–despite not being a whole lot different than the original. With this many nerds still playing vanilla Destiny these days, it’s hard to fault Bungie for the “if it ain’t broke…” approach.

One thing Destiny players should notice right away is the speed. At 60 frames, you should witness your Warlock (my personal favorite class from the O.G.) bursting through the new Cabal and torrential environs with some Igniting Touch, the usual feel-great rifle mechanics, and the new Dawnblade flame-scorching sword thing.. that is just too awesome for words. Really, I barely had no idea how to move/sprint using the damn WASD keys and I still, effortlessly, triggered my temporary super weapon and used it at will. I can’t imagine how great this arsenal will feel all over again with an Xbox controller firm in hand. The demo only got better, too, as the sporadic cannon fire (especially with the scoped rifle) only felt nastier and enemies (including the new Gladiators) only got tougher. Shoot, evade, slice. The story actually feels like something is strongly at stake for a change, too. – 4.25/5 Bibles. – Travis Moody

***BONUS E3 DEMO REVIEW***

I’m kinda sad about Extinction. After its reveal just less than 2-weeks ago, I really thought this Iron Galaxy actioneer had a shot to match what Agents of Mayhem did at E3 last year: win “Dark Horse of E3”. Nope. Not only was the game embarassingly albeit understandably buggy (i.e. walls and characters blindly disappeared into buildings) and not all that impressive (I mean.. it only takes cutting off the 150-foot Ogre’s kneebrace on the way to killing it?), the emcee for the afternoon BCD demo had a bit too much nervous laughter that put me off. I feel for the young man. He was terribly unsure of himself at times, and had a tough time following the action on-screen.

Perhaps worse, the host ducked a simple question about Extinction‘s obvious comparison to Attack on Titan with the whole cute “David v. Goliath” trope and usual “we’ll have more info coming along” response. Double meh. Some other info: if you don’t kill the Ogres in time, they regenerate limbs. The full rune attack was pretty impressive in a Shadow of Mordoresque manner, although putting these massive enemies down seemed way too simple. Whipping around towns also seemed pretty cool, with the abilities to use window awnings as bounce-pads, whips as careening devices, and slowing time for extra movements. During a brief Q&A, we learned that there will be different ways to upgrade weaponry (via currency), and that there will be story beats inside and outside of dialogue scenes with multiple exteriors and environments. 2/5 Bibles. – Travis Moody

E3ODUS [E3 2017 Preview]: The Evil Within 2 / Vampyr.

THE EVIL WITHIN 2 (Tango Gameworks/Bethesda – PS4, Xbox One, Project Scorpio, PC – TBA 2018) – There are creepy fun games, like Left 4 Dead. There are terrifying fun games, like Dying Light. Then are games that are just plain terrifying, Like The Evil Within. You don’t really play The Evil Within for “fun”; you play it to be scared shitless and brutally murdered time after time; you don’t play to feel the joy of victory; you play to feel the relief of survival. So this year, one of my favorite #E3 rumors is the return of pure horror at the Bethesda presser: The Evil Within 2.

The price of the first Evil Within has been slashed on Steam, and there are job openings for game testers for “Psycho Break” — the Japanese title for the game. Developer Tango Gameworks has even updated their website with password protected content after what seems like a lifetime of silence. So there’s a really good chance of seeing something new and evil this year at E3 (especially with the lauded praise of this year’s Resident Evil 7 behind us). They original took me a while to greally get into — hell, I only gave it a 2.75 Bible score — but once I got familiar with the controls, this Deacon was immersed in the world and felt my life was in true danger with every monster and every puzzle. That said, The Evil Within was definitely one of the best horror games I’ve ever played. Dear Lord, I just hope they’ve added the ability to jump.

Bethesda’s 2017 E3 press conference is taking place on Sunday, June 11 at 9 p.m. PT.

VAMPYR (Dontnod Entertainment/Focus Home Interactive – Xbox One, PS4, PC – November 2017) – I’m a sucker for a good vampire story, so this obviously caught my eye. If you love a good scare as much as I do, Developer Dontnod (best know for the episodic Life is Strange) has the great alternative to your little sister’s Twilight — with a brand new cinematic trailer, to boot…

Vampyr takes place in 1918 London, with the city ravaged by an outbreak of influenza. This dark and violent tale follows protagonist Jonathan Reid, and his struggle of being a man of science who wants to heal–but, also, a creature of death and darkness who must kill to survive! There are some very cool elements at play here, like the ability to sense whether someone is sick (or dying), and whether you should kill (or not kill), both of which weigh heavily into how the game unfolds. We’ve seen an early demo showcasing basic exploration and fighting mechanics, but it’s too soon to tell if this game will have the polish and depth that Dontnod intends. Hands-on time at The Big One this week? Suck you very much.

E3ODUS [E3 2017 Preview]: Need For Speed Payback / F1 2017.

“Deacon E” Esko
@eskobts

NEED FOR SPEED: PAYBACK (Ghost Games/EA – PS4, Xbox One, PC – November 10, 2017) – I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. In the gaming world, my zombie fighting, and monster killing skills have greatly improved. But the fact still remains, when the pixels hit the pavement, I’m really only good at shooting and driving. GTA reigns supreme and the early Burnout games still hold a special place in my heart. But with those out of the picture at the moment, Need For Speed: Payback is an obvious choice deemed worthy to fill that excitement. The trailer looks sick AF, but let’s not be fooled by the flashy cinematics; Ghost Games is boasting an offline single player campaign, beef with The Cartel, vehicle customization, heists, and an open-world environment. All wins in my book, even though I always make a wrong turn in open world racing — and thus go from 1st to 19th place in a fraction of a sec.

The only downside is the same downside every game comes with now, especially when EA is involved: if you want the coolest cars and the best parts, you’ve gotta pay. Expect a nice list of DLC add-ons to be available for purchase. So if you want to win once you’re playing on the interwebs, it’s gonna cost you. All in all, NFSP looks to be zooming down the right road with all green lights and the music up loud. I cant wait to get my hands on the wheel to piss off some cops and the cartel, win the race and get the girl. Not looking forward to peeling out extra cash for a super car though, so I might end up just doing donuts in the parking lot.

EA Play takes place at The Hollywood Paladium from June 10-12, and will be showing live on EA.com.

F1 2017 (Codemasters/Koch Media – PS4, Xbox One, PC – August 25th, 2017) – Not only am I, your grand Cardinal, a huge comic book geek — but I love me some Formula 1 racing. After the positive reviews of the 2016 release, Codemasters has released some tidbits before E3. What we do know is that classic cars will be making a return to 2017, including the gorgeous 2002 Ferrari F2002–included in career mode. I’m hoping for older models of cars as well (the 60s and 70s had gorgeous styles).

Speaking of which, F1 will include McLarens, with the legendary 1988 McLaren MP4/4. Now, with new track layouts we might see some iconic ones, which helps when COTA in your hometown of Austin, TX. F1 2017 will have a much more expansive career mode, so you’ll know what it’s like being a billionaire playing with multi-million dollar Hot Wheels. With Esko’s beloved NFS franchise making a return and Codemasters F1 coming in red hot, all I can leave you with is: “Happy racing!”

CALL of DUTY – INFINITE WARFARE [Review]: Star Wars.

"Deacon E" Esko @eskobts

@eskobts

Finally! The Call of Duty game I’ve been asking for. And let’s keep this one hundred: I’ve been avoiding every CoD since Modern Warfare (to which its remaster is neatly packaged with this purchase). I’ve played the others but refused to buy them. I felt like every version after Modern Warfare 2 could’ve just been released as DLC. I got really tired of playing the same game over and over with a new name.

Somehow, Infinite Warfare is completely different…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_87zvl0LcEg

I’ve jumped back into the CoD universe just in time for an onslaught of backlash from the internet. Let’s get the standards out of the way first. The game looks in-fckn-credible, and the gameplay feels awesome — two things we’ve come to expect from the franchise. Infinite Warfare has the physical feel of all the others, with the aiming, the shooting, the running (etc.) all playing the same. That’s actually a plus, seeing how CoD has one of the best combat engines in the gaming world. However, this isn’t a ground war against the Middle East, or Russia, or any other trendy enemies.

This shit's in space, bitches!!
This shit’s in space, bitches!!

It’s not just another war game, either. Infinite Warfare is more like an interactive sci-fi movie. It’s really well written and the POV interactive cut-scenes will keep you engaged in the story. The weapons are cool. Just cool. Nothing really blew my mind about them, but they’re far from disappointing. One of the main things I despised about previous CoD‘s is the ultra short campaign. I’ve been playing Infinte Warfare for about an hour or so every couple of days since it came out. So far, I still have plenty of campaign left to play. Let’s hope I’m right.

Play this game, man. It's your dest...
Play this game, man. It’s your dest…

Besides the whole “annual series fatigue”, I don’t really understand the many gamers’ frustration with Infinite Warfare. It’s exactly what a sequel is supposed to be: something new, built on a familiar foundation. However, gamer-geeks seem to be demanding the same game remade with different weapons. That saddens me. If you dont keep checking the title on the box, you’ll forget that you’re playing CoD and get completly lost in an asteroid belt, fighting robots and aliens for a peaceful solar system.

They could’ve been a bit more creative with the title. Sure. Infinite Warfare, from Infinity Ward, sounds kinda rushed and not very creative. Maybe Black Sky, Beyond Infinity, or–Halo of Duty. Either way, just embrace the change. Quit crying, set your loadout, launch your Jackal, and protect the planet. Is that really so much to ask? 4/5 Intergallactic Planetary Bibles.

There isn’t much to say about the new ScHoolBoy Q album, Blank Face LP. Now, that’s not to say that the album isn’t dope as hell. There just isn’t much about it that is new or shocking. It feels like the same story is being told. Not even a different part of the same story; the same part of the same story told on the last album. The power of this album comes from the increased skill Q has acquired since Oxymoron came out. His lyrics and song structure have improved. There’s also more energy in his delivery. With “That Part” as it’s 1st single, the album doesn’t disappoint anyone looking for the heavy beats and party vibe that we expect from Q.

(Cont.) What sets him apart from the other party rappers is that there are legit stories of struggle and sacrifice in each song. The story is told from a wise perspective, aware of the right and wrong decisions he’s made. However, that wise perspective also really likes to smoke weed, get drunk, and party. The party vibe is expressed as a celebration of surviving the street life, instead of glorifying it. That’s what I like about Q, that’s why I like this album, and that’s why I think he has a solid purpose in the TDE crew. While this album doesn’t have anything to push it way over the top in my opinion, it’s also not lacking anything. It feel like ScHoolBoy Q just got way better and rewrote Oxymoron. I enjoyed every song on Blank Face; but when it ended, I had a blank face. 3.75/5 Bibles.

If you aren’t up on who Cut Chemist is, or what his process is, you’ll get all you need to know in the track “The Break In” (ft. Mix Master Wolf). On that track, he answers Wolf’s questions about his process and influences by using samples of other tracks — describing his style as a crate digger and old school turntable sampler. The Audience’s Following is a collection of B-Sides and original samples that never made it onto his 2006 debut (as Cut Chemist), The Audience’s Listening, which was simultaneously a throwback to core hip-hop values, while pioneering the new sound that would become the producer driven hip-hop of the late Aughts. TAF strips everything from that album down to it’s most raw essence. “O Jardim” and “Van Van” pay homage to Chemist’s Latin-fused beats, with only sparse hip-hop beats underneath.

(Cont.) The demo version of “Siesta” (ft. Edan & Mr. Lif) and “Big Brother” (ft. Brother J) feel more like core hip-hop and are a nice break for people who can’t just listen to the minimalist breakbeat or abstract turntablism straight through. Standouts on the album are a nice little throwback to his hit off of TAL‘s “Altitude” with “Sea of Time” by Curtis Knight. Hymnal from Altitude also makes an appearance on the preceding track, and fits just as well with Chemist as he did back in 2006. Unfortunately, TAF doesn’t play as well all the way through as TAL did, as tracks like “Beats Thru Space” will only appeal to die-hard breakbeat heads, or turntablist purists. You’ll have to dig through the album, like Chemist digs through crates, to find what really suits you–but no matter what, there will be something there for everyone. 3.5/5 Bibles.

What y’all might understand… I’m a Virginian who grew up listening to Nottz‘ beats on 103 Jamz here in the 757 area, which happens to be where the beat guru is from. Nevertheless, I’m a day one fan. The newest edition to his catalog sees him team-up with the superb and precise rhyming skills of the MC known as Blu. The California to Virginia connection plays off like a hip-hop version of the Incredible Hercules. Blu’s flow beats in and out of Nottz’ hard hitting thunderclaps and action packed melodies. Seeing his history, soul-infused beats (Exile, Ray West, etc.) are what Blu’s used to expressing his message over–and this is no different; the emcee shares some soul-saving lessons from God and thoughts on the political unrest of the country.

(Cont.) But it’s not a straight Hip Hop record without a posse Cypher right? Blu & Nottz give heads two, with the first being a “Giant Step” featuring Bishop Lamont, Torae, Skyzoo, with DJ Revolution on the 1&2’s scratching on the hook. The second is “To The East” featuring Definite Mass, Tristate, Mickey Factz, and Johaz, with a Nottz beat so dope it needs to form a good Lawyer team. All of the features verbally assault each beat, with each track on TITF packing super hard lyricism and high caliber production. 4/5 Disciples.

"Father" Frank Barros Jr.
“Father” Frank Barros Jr.

This writer had never heard of the Ugly Heroes prior to being tasked with reviewing their most recent title, Everything In Between. I’ve learned a few things after giving the project an uninterrupted–and albeit enjoyable–listen. The hip-hop supergroup consists of Apollo Brown (the group’s producer who provides the MC’s with many soulful, jazz inspired beats), Verbal Kent (a Chitown drummer-turned-emcee), and Red Pill (a Detroit native who uses music to reflect the struggle, passion and resiliency of the Motor City). Solo artists in their own right, the Mello Music Group trio combine talents in a wonderful reminder the culture that is hip-hop is still being well represented.

(Cont.) Everything in Between leaves the mundane, overly mysoginistic, drug-abusing hip POP manifesto looking more ridiculous, if that’s even possible. This is an album that everyone can find subject matter to relate to: LIFE and all of its twists and turns. This is far from the “turn-up” trap music that currently floods radio airwaves. With tracks like “Today Right Now” and “Daisies”, with a much lighter and more optimistic spin than U.H. fans are accustomed to, and bangers, “Choir Practice” and “Force Fed”, the record is more of a reTURN to the essence of honest street poetry. With even some zany comic book superhero namedrops later in the LP — #GeekSWAG, yo! — the Ugly Heroes deliver a beautiful struggle to the hip-hop community. 4/5 Bibles.

MAFIA III (Hangar 13/2K Games – PS4, X1, PC, Mac – October 7) – I always feel weird about this kind of thing, jumping into a franchise suuuuper late with zero knowledge of the previous games. There’s a lot included that might excite me, but, of course, will be B.A.U. for the longtime Mafia gamers. I imagine Grand Theft Auto 5, minus 4-decades, plus an immersive story, and tons of historical accuracy. The story is told pure documentary style, which can be cool, but also seems to have a bit of potential to be boring. Yet, they’re boasting about adding more people on the streets, more crowd interaction, and just more liveliness overall. Sounds awesome. It’s great to feel like the city exists beyond just the main characters, with people on the streets doing people things.

(cont.) The one thing that deters me from most old timey games set in the past is the weapons. It’s cool at first but eventually, the bad guys show up and I miss my laser sights and remote mines. That’s not a dealbreaker for me, however, as I’m sure I’ll get over it like I did with not being able to jump in The Evil Within. Mafia III‘s storytelling is what excites me; Hangar 13 has done a lot to make the story and character development of the game very engaging, edgy, and intelligent. Anything that can mix those 3 things with open world fictional violence, has my support.

FIFA 17 (EA Vancouver – PS4/PS3, X1/360, PC – September 27) – GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!! One of the best-selling sports games is getting a new face lift this year when EA Sports releases FIFA 17 this September. They will launch it with a new engine, Frostbite, which is currently being used mainly for shooters like Star Wars Battlefront and the Battlefield series. This inclusion will make for a faster, quicker and prettier game (just look at new Chelsea gear-wearing Eden Hazard‘s player likeness in the trailer below!). Rumor has it that the storyline could be molded after the NBA 2K series, so that’s something. While no gameplay has been released, EA Sports has promised a much bigger reveal this Sunday at the E3 News Conference and, all the more likely, hands-on during its off-site EA Play event.

“APOSTLE” LANCE PAUL @Lance_Paul

 @Lance_Paul

GEARS OF WAR 4 (The Coalition/Microsoft – Xbox One – October 11) – You may call me an “old school” gamer, but I’m all very campaign first (multiplayer last) when it comes to shooters. So nothing has me more excited at E3 2016 than the new Gears! While last year’s E3 — and the 6-months ago MP beta — was a tad lackluster to this JD Fenix (new hero 25-years later, Marcus’ kid, also 1 of 3 new playable characters) supporter, it still showed me enough to keep the faith. Not only will you have to face the most terrible and yet brilliant set of alien creeps (The Swarm) yet, you’ve got Windflares (tornado hurricanes) to worry about.

http://youtu.be/o3f8VgQ_dqk

(cont.) The key to success? Well, first: storyline, storyline, storyline! Or at least a narrative far better than what we’ve had in the past. Despite what Design Director Cliff Bleszinski saying “Gears ain’t Shakespeare,” something more coherent than the lovechild of Arnold and Stallone meets Stargate is needed! Gears also broke new ground with the “Chainsaw-Bayonet,” so something to rival such an epic weapon will be needed. The return of the Horde mode is a must; and seeing what The Coalition does to top this insane mode should be the game’s top highlight at E3. Finally, we want and must have more functioning vehicles–nothing like that “other” classic Xbox series of old, either.
