ASSASSINATION NATION (Thursday – Hall H) – The Sam Levinson directed and Russo brothers produced Assassination Nation, which garnished a huge acquisition deal at Sundance Film Festival, pushed aside the usual spandexed superheroes and set up shop right in Hall H to close out Day 1. It stars Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, Abra, Anika Noni Rose, Colman Domingo, Maude Apatow, Bill Skarsgård, Joel McHale and Bella Thorne.

High school senior Lily and her group of friends live in a haze of texts, posts, selfies and chats just like the rest of the world. When an anonymous hacker starts posting details from the private lives of everyone in their small town, all 17,000 inhabitants, the result is absolute madness, leaving Lily and her friends questioning whether they’ll live through the night…

Joe Russo, who mentioned he had stayed off social media since the game changing ‘SNAP’ … took to the stage with Levinson (writer of The Wizard of Lies), Skarsgård (It), Waterhouse (Insurgent), and Nef (Transparent). They all discussed their purge of social media from their lives and how today’s generations have been changed by the lack of empathy in social sites.

“Imagine if the comment section came alive and tried to kill everyone you know and love. That’s [Assassination Nation] in a nutshell”, claimed Levinson. The trailer shown in Hall H was indeed pure heart-pumping madness, a cautionary tale about what can happen when the freedom of the internet starts to destroy lives. Facebook and Snapchat will be paying attention. After the trailer they showed an extended and scary home invasion scene that was shot in one continuous take. It would only take 2 months of practice and 10-hours of rolling camera with the actors.

Assassination Nation can also be characterized as Heathers meets The Strangers. Russo chimed in on the context. “This is reflective of a new generations of emerging filmmakers who are very connected to millennials and this younger generation who’ve grown up with technology in ways we did not. Here, narrative is not always primary expression.” 3.75/5 Bibles (3/5 on the Panel; 4.5/5 on the footage).

GAME OF THRONES (Friday – Hall H) – After the excellence of the Fear of the Walking Dead‘s presentation came some little show you may have heard of called Game of Thrones, moderated by the ever loving Kristian Nairn. The fallen Hodar managed this panel a bit different then normal moderators. Kristian had his own list of questions, less about the show and more about if the actors missed his presence on set. Brought on stage? Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark), John Bradley (Samwell Tully), Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei), Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm), Conleth Hill (Lord Varys), Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy), and Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth).

One of the best questions asked from Hodar was about the characters’ wants and needs on the panel. Bradley talked about how his character had never felt loved or excepted, perhaps one reason why he bonded so much with Jon Snow despite knowing he can never be his equal on the battlefield; he heads to the Citadel, but unfortunately even there is he seen as just as much of an outsider.

“Just how we do.”

Cunningham’s biggest want with his character would be retribution to Melisandra the Red Woman for the death of Shireen. But — yeah — he isn’t the cold blooded type. “I don’t think he’s the vindictive type. I think though if there’s a good chance he’s pop a couple caps in her ass. I don’t think he has a list. But he’d take her out and bury her in a shallow grave, but that’s just me.”

“It’s a doggy dog world!”

Alhough this was a very lackluster panel till the new footage was shown, let’s just say it looks like shit’s about get all crazh and cold and wintery! Expect more battles and builds that not placate the notion of Daenerys’ importance, but there’s another one as well. Snow, maybe? Only time will tell. 2.5/5 White Walkers Agree.
