FIFA 21 [Review]: Familiar Pitch.

With much of the world at standstill due to the pandemic, sportsball has been in high demand. Par the course, EA has released its annual installment of FIFA. When it comes to EA, you’re getting a mixed bag, at times opting to go the lazy route and simply copying and pasting with a new coat of paint, where the old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is a mantra. Suffice it to say, this year’s installment has that same FIFA 20, 19, 18, feel but with wicked smarter AI…

On booting up FIFA 21 you play the EUFA Champion’s League final with Liverpool vs. PSG. From the offset the AI attackers and defenders play like their real life counterparts with little to no stutters or glitches. It used to be a grind to make goals on the past entries, but in 21 the goals come fast and are plenty. By the end of regulation time the game was all tied up at 4 goals apiece. It was exhilarating to say the least.

I found the story mode to be the weakest link of the game. I mean, if you absolutely loved Volta football than you’ll be happy, but nothing really stacks up to FIFA’s The Journey. Volta, is street soccer played away from all the glamorous lights and stadiums. Instead of playing in the Etihad Stadium you’ll play in the mean streets of Paris, France or the neon asphalt of Miami, Florida– something more akin to NFL Street. You’ll create your avatar and get to modify and update their look, from whatever little stubble on his jawline to some serious cringeworthy tattoos that you’re likely to get in the middle of some drunken bender.

Career mode is split in two, be it Manager or Player. In Manager you’ll oversee your club to possible glory or disappointment. If playing the full games isn’t your thing you can sim matches in real time and jump in whenever opportune with a seamless transition. While it used to be that you would train and work your players to death the days leading to matches, now you have to find balance as there are three major categories that’ll affect their performance: fitness, sharpness and morale. These will all be a contributing factor to their overall performance on and off the pitch. If Volta is lacking for you, then look to the career mode to fill in some of the gaps.

Ultimate Team makes a triumphant return, and why wouldn’t it, it is EA’s cash cow after all. There are so many wonderful schemes and formations to play with. Time flies while you’re setting your line ups with the perfect formation and players that fit the role which is in your good interest to find a team that runs like a cohesive unit; it is fun without being tedious. Otherwise you’re talking about sloppy ball and you’ll be getting riggedy-wrecked by some kid in Brazil. Another fun tidbit, you get to customize your own FUT stadium, from the TIFO’s your fans use to the anthem’s they’ll sing out from the stands to pyrotechnics whenever you score a goal.

FIFA Ultimate Team becomes the golden goose of the bunch and where ultimately you’re bound to sink in some serious playtime. As the last entry of the current gen one can’t help but think what leaps and bounds will be made once we get to the new age of gaming (team PS5, all day!). FIFA 21 is nonetheless a fun timewaster that harkens to a time when footy was played in front of thousands of people jam packed like sardines in a stadium. A throwback to a pre-quarantine age. 3/5 Bibles.

MADDEN 21 [Review]: #FixMaddenFranchise.

It’s that time year again, Madden Season! What has changed between versions of “the only football game in town” from last year to this year you ask? Not a damn thing. Really! I mean it. That said, there are plenty of Pros and unfortunately many more Cons with Madden 21. So here’s the kick-off…

The Pros: In this year’s version of Madden NFL (now, officially, just Madden 21) has improved play on the D-Line; Tiburon have add deep zone coverage for up to 30-years in coach adjustment to help cover deep passing routes; gameplay does feel a little more fluid; QB’s don’t struggle so much passing the rock upon contact; and since X-Factor abilities aren’t as wild as they were last year, not every skill player — especially Running Backs — can do every move in the world, which helps separate the Superstars from the rest.

The Cons: AI is still dumb as bricks; O-line does not form a pocket around the QB; run blocking is the same as last year if not worse; there are just way too many fumbles in every situation; they don’t make a big deal out of injury situations (it’s almost funny how a torn ACL is so brushed over); Franchise Mode is the same as last year (the NFL Combine still doesn’t mean a thing); and Face of the Franchise is still the same, this side of the opportunity to be drafted as a RB and WR in addition to last year’s QB.

Then… there are the Cons that Tiburon refused to address, or most wanted features from fans they’ve completely ignored for at least a decade now; you know, a 2K-styled presentation, with ESPN/NFL on FOX inspired pre-game, half-time, post-game and in-game presentation with highlights around the League during Franchise Mode to make it actually feel like you are playing in something bigger. Hey, y’all; it’s Monday Night Football! EA says “so?” The commentary with the team of Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis has improved the series drastically over its previous several installments, with many live updates and even real life and other references from around the L, but EA still refuses to go bigger and more immersive with Franchise’s presentation overall.

Following a whole summer of Madden fans putting out the #FixFranchiseMode, did EA Sports listen? Hell. No. As much as we want to blame Tiburon for the game being bad, we need to blame the executives at EA that don’t care about nothin’ but money; they clearly know nothing about football or its fans. But they do care about Madden Ultimate Team, Superstar K.O and now The Yard. As for Madden 21‘s new addition, despite being crazy and different from the rest of the modes, The Yard is still a watered-down version of The Park from 2K. With out much customization or many structured modes within The Yard, it’s clear that EA just wants the kids spend more green to make they character look cooler, just like purchasing cards for MUT (Madden Ultimate Team).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNMvPse-P-g

Here’s a little advice EA: instead of spending millions of dollars on getting celebs to be a part of Superstar K.O. mode, put that money into having NFL players to do Motion Capture instead of being cheap and making up animations, because y’all just can’t get it right and too lazy to try. I’ve been playing Madden since SNES and Genesis, and this is the worst Madden ever. In the “just sayin'” category, the game has literally looked and felt the same for the past 3-4 years. Time to invest that cash into the next-gen visuals and performance so we can actually tell a difference between recent iterations and those coming to the PS5 and Xbox Series X in years to come.

My final thoughts of the game: EA needs to focus more on the fans that have played Madden since the series has started, instead of trying to manipulate kids into buying MUT cards and clothes for their character. Hire retired NFL players on your executive team so you can what real football is. But also, since this is the only football game on the market at the moment, I know a lot of football fans will buy it for that reason alone. My advice to you is, do not waste your time or money. Just wait till 2K comes out with their football game next year (so maybe we can see Player/Games/Plays of the Week and all that great little stuff we love about our 2K games), or hope Madden gets it right next year, but I wouldn’t hold my breath…

Oh, and if you’re curious, all references to the Redskins and its imagery are forever banished from the series and the Washington Football Team is here to stay. For now. 2.5/5 Madden Bibles.

THE GEEKDOM GAMESCAST [#G3G2020 – Zoom Edition]: EA PLAY x Star Wars Squadrons!

No EA PLAY in Hollywood this year, but you can bet your favorite LA-based video game podcast has your back with #G3G2020! In Episode Seven of Season Two, host Myke Ladiona and yours truly Moody were joined by one of GHG’s most passionate gamers — and real life 501st Stormtrooper — Patrick Obloy to talk what’s next from Electronic Arts…

We did that, but barely; we spent the majority of the show previewing Star Wars Squadrons and who could blame us? EA Motive’s title looks promising and we’ve got details for ya that was not presented in the event. We promise, these are the gamer dudes you’re looking for!

MADDEN NFL 20 / FIFA 20 [EA Play 2019]: It’s (Gonna Be) In The Game.

“Monsignor” Travis Moody
@TravMoody

MADDEN NFL 20 (EA Tiburon/Electronic Arts – X1/PS4/PC – August 2, 2019) – While yours truly Moody only played a standard exhibition game at the Madden 20 booth (I won against the AI on All-Pro with the Pats over the Eagles, 16-7 with 2-minute quarters for those keeping score at home), EA Play held a panel later in the morning that detailed new Madden features. This year it’s all about superstars, more specifically the Face of the Franchise. While Longshot broke the single player campaign locker room doors down for the longtime football series, this year takes another step with a story players can now finally call their own.

Madden Community Manager Israel Cruz laid down the FotF features, with the most impressive being an all new NFL Draft experience and Scenario engine that delivers week-to-week challenges that can help bolster player attributes on their way to the Pro Bowl. Yup, it’s back in Madden NFL 20. Aloha…

https://youtu.be/0MVNCFoeD9I

Both Cruz and Senior Gameplay Designer Clint Oldenburg, the hilariously self-proclaimed “Madden Ratings Adjuster”, also broke down new and unique Superstar X-Factor Abilities (yeah, this doesn’t mean we’re getting a Madden Mutant Football League — sorry *sobs*). These player specific X-Factors include Satellite (running backs who are also elite receivers) and Double Me (aggressive, overpowering receivers). Madden 20 coverboy Patrick Mahomes‘ has the exclusive Bazooka (power to stretch any defense), Escape Artist (faster QB scrambler), Dashing Deadeye (perfect accuracy on throws while running outside the pocket), and Red Zone Deadeye (exactly as it sounds).

Oldenburg also dug into the newly added signature pre and post-snap animations, and dual purpose gameplay mechanics that help QB’s seemlessly alter between throwing and running. To top it off, the Madden 20 playbook will feature over 200 RPO (Run Pass Option) plays. Crazy. Just wish there was someone to explain all this great news to me as I was playing. 3.25/5 Bibles (Hands-On = 2.75/5; Panel/New Features = 3.75/5).

FIFA 20 (EA Vancouver/Electronic Arts – X1/PS4/PC/Switch – September 27, 2019) – So, this is a curious one. EA Sports introduces VOLTA — street futbol! — this year in FIFA 20, and.. I didn’t get to play it. My hands-on demo today consisted of only one option, the same sole option from the FIFA 19 demo: playing a friendly in the UEFA.

Thank heavens my local competition was fun, as Liverpool and Real Madrid would go into extra time, and extra time, and ultimately penalty kicks. Somehow I won, and FIFA is more of the same solid play of last year’s game, except that AI teammates (at least mine) appeared far more stonefooted, unsure and unaware. It was awfully frustrating, but it’s a Pre-Alpha demo, so I don’t want to judge it too harshly. The real reason you’re here is to learn more about this anyway…

Kudos to EA for doing something far drastic with one of their sportsball titles for a change! VOLTA is a street game of 3v3, 4v4, and 5v5, where players can take the pitch from the concrete, the court and global futsals; think London cages, Amsterdam underpasses and Tokyo rooftops. Best of all, you can create your own player and take them through the VOLTA Story Mode. Yes!

Actual FIFA gameplay improvements include:

  • Authentic Game Flow – Players will have more awareness of time, space and positioning (neither of which I witnessed in my friendly, but I digress…)
  • Decisive Moments – Set Piece Refresh, Controlled Tackling (this I did notice, as tackling was much more clean and led to less penalties), and Composed Finishing (this is huge, seeing how the worse part of FIFA 19 was finishing the play around the net)
  • Ball Physics System – Offers new shot trajectories, more realistic tackle interactions, and physics-driven behavior (I feel like this is an element of FIFA they’ve been working on forever, but we’ll see)

All these new features and improvements for FIFA 20 sound superb, and VOLTA sounds addicting AF. But again, it’s strange that, today at EA Play–with a release date less than just 4 months away–I didn’t get the chance to see any of this in action. 3.25/5 Bibles (Hands-On = 2.25/5; Panel/New Features = 4.25/5).

THE E3ODUS [E3 2019 Preview]: Madden NFL 20 / FIFA 20.

Artez “The Aztec” Bailey
IG @aztecstudiosla

MADDEN NFL 20 (EA Tiburon – X1/PS4/PC – August 2, 2019) – It’s that time of year again for EA Play. And after last year’s Madden being a big disappointment and EA Sports doing a lazy job with bad animations, bugs.. and everything else under the stadium sun, EA promises that Madden NFL 20 will be the best Madden game ever. While they say that, well, every year, new additions like RPO’s ( Run-Pass Options), unique team-specific playbooks, and the bringing back of Career Mode definitely make for a promising start

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbRy7lZuUNI

One of the things that I’m most looking forward to is EA taking away the Quarterbacks’ ability to drop back a ridiculous 20 yards and throw an accurate pass; now, icons will disappear when QB’s drop back too far. Also, superstars and gridiron warriors who excel in their positions will receive stat boosts, and there is a way for the opposition to counter these boosts, too. EA has claimed they have they are bug-testing early, rather than the usual waiting for the game to launch. Imagine that.

With the brand new and exciting “Face of the Franchise” QB1 Mode — where your rocketman sees his time battling through the college ranks and even the NFL Combine — this is the year the longtime EA Sports franchise needs to put up or shut up. I’ll have more for you when I get my hands on Madden 20 on June 8th at EA Play. The free public event takes place from June 7th to June 9th.

@Cheeky_Basterds

FIFA 20 (EA Vancouver/Romania – X1/PS4/PC/Switch – September 27th, 2019) – Two things are guaranteed in life, death and taxes, and yearly EA Sports installments. So three things really. With summer kicking into gear it’s the telltale sign of intercontinental footy coming to an end, although MLS will be in full swing. So how else will football aficionados get their fix? FIFA, of course.

FIFA 19 came out with a set of shiny bells and whistles i.e. updated graphics, UEFA club competitions inclusion, and “Active Touch System”, although got generally favorable reviews with the less than stellar criticism comparing it to PES (minus our own Moody, who absolutely adored it). EA’s phenomenal The Journey comes to a head with the once-green Alex Hunter achieving super stardom and filling in Ronaldo’s absence in Real Madrid and playing the grand stage, The Champion’s League *cue Champion’s League theme*.

No doubt that Ultimate Team will make a return, seeing as how that’s EA’s cash cow. It’ll be interesting to see where and if The Journey makes a return mayhaps with a new protagonist or if EA is so inclined Hunter’s sister making her way through the ranks or a completely new overhaul. One of the big expectations is the use of dynamic weather, one of the few aspects PES has already beat FIFA to.

With a who’s who in the football world who would be called upon to grace the cover? Might it be the Spur’s Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur’s Heung-Min Son or Liverpool’s wunderkind Mohamed Salah. Either way let’s hope the newest iteration doesn’t need additional patches to fix a broken game and expect there to be a dope soundtrack, as always.
