MARVEL’S MIDNIGHT SUNS [Preview] – Suns of (Magical) Anarchy!

Felipe Crespo

WELCOME!!! I know, it’s been a minute. Many minutes. A few things transpired here and there, but let’s talk about December 2nd… Many moons ago, ya boy reviewed XCOM 2 for the Xbox One and absolutely loved it. Firaxis turned me into a huge fan of theirs with the first game, XCOM: Enemy Unknown (and its “1.5” follow up, Enemy Within). This is thing “A” that I love.

Thing “B” is Marvel. Just like millions, I’m a massive Marvel geek. The comics, PS5 Spidey, the movies, the shows, the meh Marvel’s Avengers game, and even some of the shitty mobile games drip feed it all into my veins. Disney…

I mention this because the gaming gods and Firaxis are combining A and B to give us Marvel’s Midnight Suns. A card-based strategy game where you take a 3-person squad up against FORCES MOST FOUL!

Too much?

The game borrows elements from roguelike card strategy stalwarts like Slay the Spire and Monster Train in that you can collect and edit different cards and decks for each character. From there, they can be upgraded as you level up and re-rolled at the forge. You’ll be able to create different decks for different situations, which I can greatly appreciate considering that the developers have confirmed New Game+ and a staggering 8 difficulty levels. It’s also been revealed recently that some mid-level bosses (Crossbones and Sabretooth confirmed so far) can just show up unexpectedly… That shouldn’t be stressful at all.

Also, my nerdy ass will absolutely be making different “armor decks” for Iron Man.

The actual mission layouts will be very familiar to XCOM fans, though movement is a lot less restricted. Gone is the square grid movement that’s so prevalent in the strategy genre. I’m also hoping they’re bringing their knack for ruthless enemy AI at the higher difficulty levels.

An interesting aspect to the game that Firaxis has added is relationship building. In between missions, you get to further your bonds with certain teammates. Spar with Blade, hang out with Nico, study with Dr. Strange; you get the idea. Doing so will level up cards, unlock new perks, mods, etc. You won’t be able to do so with everyone, so you’ll want to put some thought into who you like to use and your team compositions.

In addition to growing closer to your team, you should use the downtime to explore the Abbey (your HQ, not the one in Downtown). Doing so will reward you with lore pieces, certain unlocks, mission items, and Easter eggs. We nerds sure do love our Easter eggs.

I still haven’t mentioned who the Midnight Suns are, have I? Well, you’ve got : Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Dr. Strange, Sister Grimm, Magik, Scarlett Witch, Ghost Rider, and Blade.

There’s also The Hunter, an original hero (the protagonist) that you get to model after yourself. Or Roman Reigns, Conan O’Brien, Billie Eilish, Zendaya? I don’t know. Do you.

DLC will bring an additional four heroes. Each with their own story: Venom, Morbius, Deadpool, and Storm.

As excited as I am, it feels odd to not point out a concern or something that I’m not feeling great about, but thankfully it’s not a lot and one is just visual:

– The actual Midnight Suns team costumes? Kinda hate them. Most of the black and gold getups look gaudy and weird. Highly doubt I’ll touch them all.

– Haven’t seen terrain elevation differences in any of the gameplay footage I’ve seen…at all. I love card roguelikes, so I’m sure I’ll still love it; but as an XCOM guy, it’s a weird thing to see.

No Moon Knight? Are you serious? For the love of Konshu…

Hope this helps you decide if you want to check it out! One more thing, though. There’s one unannounced hero that’s unlocked after you beat the game… Keep scrolling down to find out who it is, since it’s been leaked (of course).

You sure? SNIKT!

How about we BLAZE it up?

They actually let the monstrous, green cat out of the bag on Twitter this Tuesday… After you beat the game, you get Big Green himself. Thankfully you won’t have to use him with this look.

A TOY KINDA MOOD [Episode 92] – Marvel Legends “50 Years of Ghost Rider” HasLab!

Holy smokes, the metal chains of roaring fire are rollin’ once again and we’re here to livestream react to Hasbro’s “50 years of Ghost Rider” HasLab!

Is it Robbie Reyes? Johnny Blaze? Danny Ketch? Or all THREE Riders? A light-up ’69 Dodger Charger? And one or a pair of Suzuki GSX-R1000/1300R Hayabusas? Find out which Spirit of Vengeance the wonderful team over at Marvel Legends has set free on the roads to hell.

MARVEL’S GHOST RIDER and HELSTROM [TV News]: The Spirits of Vengeance!

Marvel’s Ghost-Rider and Marvel’s Helstrom make their way to Hulu in 2020, as Marvel Television and Hulu expand their partnership with the addition of these two new live-action series based on fear properties.

Marvel’s Ghost Rider centers on Robbie Reyes, the quintessential antihero, who lives on the Texas/Mexico border, consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. When he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles controlling the power he wields.

According to Variety, Gabriel Luna will ride again and reprise the role of Reyes, last found as the blazing demonic skull on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  Marvel’s Ghost Rider is executive produced by Ingrid Escajeda, who will serve as showrunner, Paul Zbyszewski and Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb.

“I couldn’t be more excited and honored to be handed the reins to a Marvel character as beloved as GHOST RIDER. This story hits every note for me—my love for grounded yet conflicted characters and my desire to scare the $&!# out of people! It’s important to me to find a take that thrills existing fans as well as wider audiences and I believe we’ve done just that,” said Escajeda.

Daimon and Ana Helstrom are the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer in Marvel’s Helstrom. The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the worst of humanity—each with their attitude and skills. Marvel’s Helstrom is executive produced by Zbyszewski, who will serve as showrunner and Marvel Television’s Loeb.

“As a lifelong Marvel fan, I feel incredibly fortunate to help bring this darker, thrilling corner of the comic book universe to life, and I’m just grateful to everyone at Marvel Television and Hulu for the opportunity,” said Zbyszewski. “Marvel’s known for all the heart, humor, and action they put into every series, but this time around we’re adding some scares to that mix. I think we’ve found a compelling way to dissect some of our deepest fears through the experiences of our two lead characters.”

“We’re thrilled Hulu will be moving into a new—admittedly chilling—corner of the Marvel Universe with GHOST RIDER and HELSTROM. Paul and Ingrid are crafting gripping adventures into fear that live in our SPIRITS OF VENGEANCE cornerstone.”

Both series are co-productions with Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios and join the upcoming third season of Marvel’s Runaways and recently announced adult animated series based on the popular Marvel Television characters including Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., Marvel’s Hit Monkey, Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show, and Marvel’s Howard the Duck, which will culminate in a special event, Marvel’s The Offenders.

COSMIC GHOST RIDER #1 — Marvel Comics
“El Sacerdote” J.L. Caraballo Twitter @captzaff007

I did not like this. Throughout the entirety of my reading Cosmic Ghost Rider #1, I kept getting the feeling of how comics were in the early-to-mid-1990s: SO KEEEEEEWWWWWL, MAN! THEY’S SO EXTREEEEEEME! THE DARKER THE BETTER! I WANT MY COMICS SO DARK THE ART IS JUST A BLACK PIECE OF PAPPPEEERRRRRRR!!! That shit isn’t for me, though. If you like it, hey, all power to you, and I sincerely hope you enjoy this. But twice while reading this issue I turned back to the cover page to make sure that yes, I am indeed reading the right comic for review, the characters therein are in fact the ones I think they are, and no, I’m not just drunkenly hallucinating a mishmash of whatever comics I currently own.

Even with the 2-page long breather catching the reader up to how, and why, Frank Castle is currently in Valhalla, after being Thanos’ black right hand, after being the herald of Galactus, after being killed, after….man, I got tired just writing that…I was out for a loop. Look, last I checked in the pages of the monthly Punisher comics, Frank had stolen the War Machine armor and was fighting most of the Marvel heroes… that makes considerably more sense than anything I’d read in these pages. So…the Punisher is now the Ghost Rider, and he makes it his first mission to go back in time and kill Thanos. But he doesn’t? And instead kidnaps baby Thanos and rides with him around in his little space motorcycle? (Somewhere, DC Comics is salivating at the Lobo intellectual property theft…probably the only time “Lobo” and “intellectual” can be used in the same sentence).

One of these things is not like the other, no matter how damn hard they insist they are.

Donny Cates does decent work writing this title, throwing in a bunch of exposition while making Frank sound at least a bit like the Frank I know (primarily the Garth Ennis version of Frank).  “But J.L., you magnificent son-of-a-bitch! The Punisher is SO COOL interacting with other Marvel heroes! It can’t all be Punisher MAX!” Yeah, I get it, but compare his crossover here with his interactions in Welcome Back, Frank. Or even in the last Secret Wars event, where the last act Frank undertakes, as the universe is exploding, is gunning down as many super-villains as he possibly can. The art by Dylan Burnett is okay…it kept reminding me of the first series of Spider-Gwen, and it’s great that Frank is still aging in real-time; but this just kept feeling so out-of-character from what I’m used to from the Punisher. The design would be great if it were not Frank Castle. I was constantly reminded of when Speedball was turned into Penance — and not in a good way.

“Well, J.L., man, it seems like you went into this title with expectations. So sorry it tried something new!” Yeah…I was expecting a Ghost Rider in my Ghost Rider comic, not Punisher as Ghost Rider in Valhalla with Thanos. Jeez, just writing all that again made me grimace and leaves a weird taste. I can suspend my disbelief as well as the next guy, but this is not for me. Instead I’ll just go crack open my Punisher MAX series for the 30th time. 2/5 Weird Space Motorcycles.

DEATH OF THE INHUMANS #1 – Marvel Comics

The issue starts off with a refresher on the origins of the Inhumans before finding out the Kree are calling all the Inhumans back and are willing to use bloody maneuvers to see it happen. They have already started killing thousands of Inhumans and carving “Join or Die” into their bodies by the beginning of the comic, with an Inhuman executioner named Vox leading the bloodletting!

Death of the Inhumans #1 begins by wasting named Inhuman characters within the first 10 pages and doesn’t stop until the end of the comic. You can tell that after the flop of the Inhuman comics, and the bomb that was the the Inhuman television show Marvel has decided, less Inhumans is a positive thing. The higher-ups have decided with the Fox merger that Mutants are back in the wheelhouse and we don’t need the “lesser” Inhuman characters anymore. The layout of the story in Death reflects this very tellingly. I’m totally okay with it. The story was enjoyable so much that it showed Donny Cates (Redneck) wasn’t messing around with the kid gloves. 4/5 X-Men Agree!

SAGA / GOTHAM A.D. / DAREDEVIL / SHADOWMAN / JOHNNY BLAZE [Reviews]: Spring Reading!

Good evening, geeks and geekettes! Spring seems to have stubbornly arrived, and with the coming of the warm weather are some of the better comics titles out there! We have some of the industry’s heavy hitters coming back, as well as some monumental, essential issues coming your way! Let’s just dive right in this Easter Fool’s Day, and see what’s what…

Colleen “of the Covenant” Vincent
@CollyCol
SAGA #50 – Image Comics

Since its 2012 debut, Saga has remained one of the comic industry’s freshest and most beautiful titles. This intergalactic epic for the ages, continues to be weird and gorgeous and relevant. The fugitive interplanetary family at its center has been through so much loss and upheaval, it is nice to see them somewhat settled on none planet for a bit.

Horned Marko and his winged bride, Alanna enjoy a “date” complete with a scandalously explicit first panel. These two are still crazy for each other after seven years and it shows quite “fluidly”. Meanwhile, Hazel is being trained by her latest babysitter — prison escapee and trans woman, Petrichor and danger stalks royal turned jaded turncoat Prince Robot and his journalist allies, the snarky lovers Doff and Upsher as an old favorite returns looking …considerably different. Issue #50 is as full of joy and strife as ever and the consistency of have the same writer and artist seven years later keeps the quality high. Brian K. Vaughn has authored some great Image titles, but Fiona Staples’ artwork continues to bring these unique characters to life. Saga deserves its beloved status just as much today as it did almost seven years ago. 5/5 Bibles.

MOTHER PANIC: A.D. #1 – DC Comics/Young Animal

Disclaimer: I’m more of a Marvel/Indie girl, in the long run — but I can’t resist the lure of Gotham City. With that said, I was excited to read Mother Panic: Gotham A.D #1. I’d enjoyed the original series, but since this is a new take on the character, I was interested to see how i stacked up. While it had its moments, the story — written by Jody Hauser — didn’t catch my interest in the way that the original did. For a brand new reader, or someone who has a casual acquaintance with Batman’s beloved city, it stands up.

Ibrahim Moustafa‘s art is striking and bold, making it a visually stunning piece. Set in the time after the Milk Wars, Violet is back, but not really back. She’s dealing with a new timeline and familiar faces. Because I’m a fan of Young Animal and their comics’ take on familiar characters and settings, I’ll keep reading, if only to see where it goes. For me, the most compelling thing in this new Mother Panic comic is the appearance of the Joker – broken and crazy as he is. Oh, and there’s a Monty Python reference which automatically gives it an extra bible. Whether you’re a new or old reader, this one’s worth a read, especially if you’ve missed out on all of the Young Animals books up to this point. 3.5/5 Bibles.

“Cardinal” Roberto de Bexar
@RobBex2
DAREDEVIL #600 – Marvel Comics

With any seminal issue, you hope that who ever is in charge of the story at that time will push the character into a direction that will last for the next 100 issues. Case in point, in Uncanny X-Men 300, we saw Magneto’s acolytes; in Amazing Spider-Man 700 we watched Peter Parker  “die” and Otto Octavious take over his mind.

So with Daredevil 600, writer Charles Soule and artist Ron Garney have take the Man without Fear into a new direction and it makes me wish I would have kept up with this run after Mark Waid and Chris Samnee, we see Wilson Fisk as Mayor and Murdock as his deputy Mayor and with Fisk as Mayor all superheroes have been outlawed. There is a lot to cover in the issue, but to quickly (he said ironically) wrap up this issue, all the street level heroes have been arrested, the beast from the Shadowland storyline is trying to make its way back to New York and the Hand have once again tried to assassinate the Kingpin which leaves… dun dun duuuuuuun… Matt Murdock as acting mayor.

Charles Soule is an amazing writer and he takes Daredevil into a whole new direction. How will a Matt Murdock survive being the Daredevil AND the Mayor?! It is a long worded issue, but totally and absolutely worth the read. It actually makes the $4.99 price tag actually worth it. Ron Garney’s artwork is as beautiful as ever. It is as crisp and clear today as it was nearly 20 years ago when I was fawning over it when he was drawing Captain America with Mark Waid. 4/5 Blind Bibles.

“Inquisitor” Luke Anderson @LUKEPOISONER
SHADOWMAN #1 – Valiant Entertainent

After a break of nearly 5 years we finally get more of Valiant’s occult-flavoured hero, Shadowman. One of the original Jim Shooter-created Valiant heroes, he’s been out of action for a couple of years since his excellent Valiant relaunch series — “trapped in the Deadside”, as people say — but now returns under the superstar stewardship of writer Andy Diggle (Green Arrow: Year OneThe Losers2000AD) and heavy-hitting rising star artist Stephen Segovia (Dark WolverineAction ComicsNinjak) …and not a moment too soon, with his voodoo-powered ally Lady Mambo nearly overwhelmed by Louisiana’s rising tide of Samedi cultists and swamp monsters. Very serious stuff, indeed.

After years trapped in the Deadside by Master Darque, Shadowman emerges from a portal with his powers unstable and his loa (voodoo spirit thing that he gets his powers from) extremely pissed off. This staus quo is a perfect jumping on point, which also distills the character’s core mythos and expands the Valiant universe’s recently-neglected supernatural lore. Diggle already has the Louisiana vodoun patois down; and Segovia’s thick, inky yet defined lines and big panels fill the book with a detailed gloom and an action-filled murkiness which distinguish the book grimly from most of the superhero fare available. For fans of old Shadowman games and comics, for sure, but also new readers who love dark and horror comics, Valiant continues to be the publisher I recommend most often, and Shadowman #1 is my latest reason why. 4/5 Years in the Wilderness.

DAMNATION: JOHNNY BLAZE – GHOST RIDER #1 – Marvel Comics

Mmm…Spoilers ahead! Beware and enter at your own risk!

What makes Ghost Rider #1 such a good read? Well for starters, it begins how a lot of books end (hell, how a lot of series and events end) : Johnny Blaze dead, thanks to Mephisto. And this is where our story starts. With Blaze and Ghost Rider together, SEPARATED. In hell. Christopher Sebela‘s script does a great job of establishing the relationship between the Rider and Blaze. It’s interesting seeing the Spirit of Vengeance realize that he doesn’t have a need for Johnny anymore and in return, seeing Blaze scramble for reasons and what to say to convince him otherwise.

This is also one of the more interesting takes on Ghost Rider, and hopefully the series continues with this dynamic. Phil Noto‘s art perfectly pairs with the strong story, in large part due to his great facial expressions. Not to mention the issue is heavy on action, and even has a great Mad Max-like chase. There’s enough action and excitement to go around with this issue. My only real gripe is the stereotypical depiction of hell. Minor gripe, really, just more of the same look and palette. Hopefully the imaginary, hellish environment changes in the next few issues. 4.75/5 Smoking Bibles.

GHOST RIDER #1 - Marvel
GHOST RIDER #1 – Marvel

MoodyPatsTaking a cue from the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.–a comic that finally resembled the likeness of the hit television show–Ghost Rider #1 sparks its scorching hot engines for another go at Robbie Reyes. Another, as in.. his 3rd #1? With Marvel counting on the fiery East LA resident’s newfound popularity to survive on the shelves, it’s up to Felipe Smith (who owns a pair of unfortunately slept-on GR runs in his resume) to give it another go. Problem is, there’s a pair of forced cameos (“Totally Awesome” Hulk), a hollow baseline for newly interested readers to learn from (his brother Gabe’s story again), and admirable Danilo Beyruth art that pales to the excellence that was Tradd Moore. At least he, himself too, draws an outstanding skull of flame. 2/5 Bibles.

Marvel hasn’t quite been batting .1000 with their Star Wars comics ever since they gained the rights back from Dark Horse, but–damn it–they are close. I mean, as someone who really enjoyed what Dark Horse was doing, it is truly impressive just how good most of these books have been. Interestingly enough though, they have largely been about familiar characters from the Star Wars movies or animated shows. Doctor Aphra is different, in that we are now getting a spin-off book from a character that originated in the new comics canon, via the excellent Darth Vader series that recently wrapped up. Seriously, if you haven’t read that, do it! Power of the dark side and what-not.

That said, Doctor Aphra #1 has a decent chunk of connective tissue to that series and how it concluded, but not enough to prevent anyone from picking up this book and enjoying it on its own. Really, it sort of functions like a Han Solo story; but Han Solo is a young, crooked criminal with a violent Wookie friend and C3P0’s murderous cousin. With that in mind, Kieron Gillen and Kev Walker‘s Doctor Aphra seems like it will be a fun way to explore a very new character, created specifically as a Star Wars comic book character–which is unique. It looks like a Star Wars story. It feels like a Star Wars story, but it manages to do with with entirely unfamiliar characters. 4/5 Bibles.

Inhumans v. X-Men #0 was a whole lot of set-up, with the payoff–of course–being TO BE CONTINUED… Thanks, Marvel. It sets up the main players of the latest X-event; you have Beast trying to play both sides and be diplomatic, and, all the while, Emma Frost is rallying the mutants to attack the Inhumans. The Brotherhood makes an appearance; the Hellfire Club, also, as Frost tries to court them. The Inhumans–depending on Beast to find a cure for the Terrigen mist affecting mutantkind–come to the conclusion that they also must prepare for war. 2.5/5 Bibles.

The title isn’t a giveaway, but this comic takes place in the world of Archie and Friends. You know, those adorable little goody-goody buddies, who always seem to get into some sort of teen angst drama, but in a comical, make you say, “Awwww,” kind of way. Anywho, this is a tale to help readers get a view of Reggie, the school “villain,” from a different point of view. The view of Vader, his dog! I have to say, I was never a big Archie reader, except for when I got that bubble gum with the snippets printed on the wrapper — but this was a pleasant read. I like the idea of telling the story of the “villain” through the eyes of the one who knows him better than anyone and loves him unconditionally, as only a dog can do.

There isn’t much plot in this first comic, just exposition from Vader on the insights to Reggie’s way of thinking. The storytelling by Tom DeFalco (Iron Man) is what you could expect from a cute after-school special about a bully, yet whitty with a few chuckles along the way. The art by Sandy Jarrell (DC Bombshells) is exactly what you would expect from a modern Archie comic, simple lines and broad colors to keep the eye flowing from frame to frame. Overall, as engrossed in Vader’s viewpoint as I was, I do not believe I will continue to join his adventures with Reggie. 3/5 Bubblegum Snaps.

A long-defunct toy company called Kenner (yes, the original Star Wars action figure manufacturer, from 1976!), created their Mobil Armored Strike Kommand brand, back in 1985, to compete with the Hasbro’s Transformers behemoth, that Cybertronned to Earth a year earlier, in 1984. I used my stealthy contacts on the Black Market to acquire Kenner’s original secret M.A.S.K. formula, below:

Poor Man’s G.I. Joe Squad of Four + Non-Sentient Gobot Vehicles = M.A.S.K. The original M.A.S.K. was led by a blonde-and-blue-eyed Aryan-looking dude, born of Race Bannon and Conrad “Duke” Hauser, named Matt Trakker, who spun the wheel of a red Chevy Camaro that “transformed” into a gull-winged fighter jet. All of Trakker’s team have equally unimpressive, modified vehicles that will equally bore you to bits in this digital age of technological transmogrification; although if you’re into following the exploits of a politically-correct quartet parading around in masks that each have their own blinged-out battery-charging units, then this book (written by ThundercatsBrandon M. “Cardinal” Gary Brooks

Hello GHG flock! To give you a little history here, I’ve been a fan of Venom since his/its first appearance way back in Amazing Spider-Man #300. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Venom is a symbiotic organism made up of a black gooey substance that can take many forms, with powers very similar to Spider-Man. After being rejected by Peter Parker, the sybiote joined with Eddie Brock to become one of Spidey’s deadliest foes! Of course, there have been a few Venoms since–most notably good guy, Spidey pal, Secret Avenger and sometime Guardian of the Galaxy, “Flash” Thompson. This new series, however, handled by writer Mike Costa (Web Warriors) and artist Gerardo Sandoval (Venom: Space Knight), takes on a few too many creative liberties with Venom’s mouth and tongue! While Costa has a big background in military writing and Sandoval’s art does the trick, I’d rather see a series that explains the absence of longtime host Eddie Brock. Will Venom return to his pure evil roots? I’n not exactly sure I’ll be here to find out. 3/5 God Books.
