TOM CLANCY’S SPLINTER CELL (Ubisoft Toronto – PS4, Xbox One/Project Scorpio, PC) – I’d like to think I’m taking a risk and predicting that Ubisoft will propose a follow-up for the longtime fan favorite Splinter Cell series at E3 2017. The last game from 2013, Splinter Cell: Blacklist was panned — mostly from fans — due to the dated graphics and the ending. Yet it was critically praised, and brought back the revered mode Spies vs. Mercs. This Advocate personally loved the game and its stylish UI. But another criticism was that Michael Ironside would not return as the voice of Sam Fisher, with Eric Johnson, instead, stepping into the voice.

With no real Metal Gear Solid game (I mean, there’s Revenge and all), the time is ripe for another great stealth/shooter. One: flashback to 2016; according to NeoGAF, a source close to the studio claimed that Michael Ironside stated he was returning to the voice of Fisher. Two: Ubisoft always has one surprise to cap off their E3 pressers, be it Rainbow Six: Patriots or Siege, For Honor, and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands. Following the pattern, another Splinter Cell fits into what the publisher is doing– especially since there isn’t a shooter mixed in with all the South Park, Assassin’s, Rabbids, and Just Dancing. It’s Ubisoft; there has to be a shooter. Four: Blacklist dropped for the last gen when the PS4 and One were about to release; a new SC fits in where the Scorpio and PS4 Pro are ready for lift off. And, finally, number Five: Ubisoft has applied for two new trademarks relating to the Splinter Cell franchise. Boom.
The E3 2017 Ubisoft conference will be held in the Orpheum Theatre on June 12 at 1pm PT. Watch all the inevitable Matt & Trey jokes on Twitch.
